Check Engine Pressure Leakage on Mazda Speed 6

This wikiHow will show you how to carry out an air leak down test on a Mazda Speed 6. This test will determine if there is a leak in the heads/gasket of the engine by the use of various tools and procedures.

Steps

  1. Pull engine hood lever found under the steering wheel of the car to open the hood.
  2. Remove plastic engine cover
  3. Locate coil packs found under engine cover placed in correspondence to each cylinder.
  4. Unplug wires from coil packs
  5. Remove the screw that is securing coil pack in place and pull coil pack out.
  6. Unscrew spark plug found under where the coil pack was in by using a special spark plug head and extension tool. Do this with gently and by hand to avoid snapping/breaking any of the components inside.
  7. Remove spark plug from its secured location.
  8. Connect an air compressor to one of the terminals on a cylinder leakage tester unit..
  9. Connect the second terminal cylinder leakage tester to the location where the spark plugs were secured in.
  10. Open the air pressure terminal using the knob found on the unit to allow air to flow into the unit and into the the engine.
  11. Check the pressure readings on both meters. If the pressure reading on the terminal that is connected to the air compressor is greater than the one connected to the engine, than that means that the engine is leaking air. Both readings have to be identical in order for the engine to be leak free.

Tips

  • Be gentle when unscrewing bolts, screws and spark plugs to decrease risk of snapping or breaking any of them in the process.
  • Keep all items that were removed in a secure location to avoid losing any of them.
