Keep Any Engine Running Its Best

A new car will run perfectly. As it gets older, you may start noticing your car runs differently, and it's probably because of the engine.

Steps

  1. Make sure the gas tank is at least half full to prevent dirt from going into the intake as much as possible.
  2. Make sure the engine is getting plenty of air (do not add a turbo unless you know what to do), there is no air filter on small engines (lawn mowers, trimmers, etc) is technically fine, there is high flow are filter on bigger engines (vehicles, motorcycles) is best.
  3. Check the oil. Oil is a must to keep full, even dirty oil is better than low oil, so if you can not purchase oil and have some old use it, do not run an engine low on oil, if oil is too low its best to wait until oil can be purchased and then use the tool.
  4. Replace the spark plugs. Spark plugs should be properly gapped and kept clean as possible. Spark plugs kept clean help with start up and continuous running with best gas usage possible. Dirty plugs will use more gas plus can be hard to start.
  5. Overworking the engine is never recommended. Use all engines as they are intended. The harder the engine is worked, it's more likely a new one will be needed.
  6. Don't overwork your engine. If the engine seems to be running hot, stop using unless it is an absolute must. Check coolant and fan to see if things are full and running proper. If so, wait till day temperature cools a bit then start engine again. Some engines do not tolerate hot days and are best used during evening temperatures.

Tips

  • Most engines are not made for high test fuel, or top fuel. Regular unleaded gasoline with proper care will work just fine toward its intended purpose. High test gasoline is not needed for most and will not improve performance much, if any.
  • Never modify an engine unless you are experienced or have gotten professional advice with doing so.
  • If the engine starts to shake or vibrate out of control, shut down immediately. Do not start again until seen by a mechanic.
  • Never use gas additives unless again you know how and how much.
