Choose Toppings for Crumpets

Crumpets are a delicious breakfast addition and are also an easy snack meal. In comparison to bread, crumpets have a more substantial texture and are delicious when the air holes fill up with melting butter, margarine or other topping. If you're stumped for ideas on what to put on your crumpets, try some of the suggestions here.

Steps

  1. Purchase some crumpets. Check that they are in date and that they are soft. Harder crumpets will stay hard when you toast them, although whether or not this bothers you is a question of personal taste.
  2. Be simple. The most simple way to have a crumpet is to toast it and eat it without a topping. Few people enjoy this state, however, and add some butter, which is also very simple. If you don't enjoy butter, try soy or bran rice margarine.
  3. Choose a savoury topping. Savoury toppings are delicious on crumpets. Here is a selection of ideas (and butter/margarine is optional in each case):
    • Vegemite, Marmite, Our Mate or any other yeast extract spread
    • Peanut butter, macadamia nut butter, cashew nut butter, almond butter
    • Slice of tomato topped with salt and pepper
    • Melted cheese with slices of tomato, salt and pepper
    • Cheese and gherkin slices
  4. Choose a sweet topping. Owing to the fact that crumpets are fairly bland, sweet toppings work really well also. Here are some suggestions (again, butter/margarine optional):
    • Jams and jellies
    • Banana slices or mashed banana (cinnamon or nutmeg sprinkled on is delicious)
    • Nutella or similar sweet nutty or chocolate spread
    • Marmalade or lemon curd
    • Golden syrup, honey and maple syrup

Tomato and cheese toppings

For the tomato and cheese toppings:

  1. Pre-heat the grill to mid to high.
  2. Get out the desired amount of crumpets. Also grab tomato, cheese and salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Put the crumpets in the grill. Place them upside-down to make them crunchy on the bottom
  4. Slice the tomato and cheese.
  5. Take the crumpets out of the grill and place the tomato and cheese on the top of the crumpets. Add salt and pepper.
  6. Place the crumpets back in the grill. Cook until the cheese has just melted.
  7. Take out of the grill. Serve and enjoy!
  8. Finished.

Tips

  • Vegans should always check the ingredients of crumpets. Many are made without dairy but some include skimmed milk powder.
  • Crumpets come in a variety of shapes - round, square and fingers. Select the shape that you prefer. Square crumpets are good for processed cheese slices and fingers are great for toddlers to hold and chew on.
  • Ultimate crumpet. Toast the crumpet over an open fire on both sides. It can be toasted fast very close to a red hot glowing fire using a toasting fork. A 2 or 3 tine long handled toasting fork is best. Toasted this way they are especially good with your favourite topping.
