Choose Whether to Wear the Hijab

The Hijab is a headscarf worn by some Muslim women and describes their full dress code to protect them from unwanted attention and to preserve their modesty. It includes rules for covering the feet, what jewelry can be worn and even limits for the amount of make-up that is permitted.

Steps

  1. Understand why you wish to wear the Hijab. Those believers (Muslim women) who choose to wear it do so not only because they believe it is a requirement stated in the Qur'an and Sunnah, but because it helps protect them from unwanted attention.:

    • "O Prophet, tell your wives and daughters and the believing women to draw their outer garments around them (when they go out or are among men). That is better in order that they may be known and not annoyed..." (Qur'an 33:59)
    • Many also feel that wearing the Hijab permits a woman to be judged for her skills and intelligence rather than for her looks.
    • It is a sign of being a Muslim with good, moral character.
  2. Make a decision to wear it. Once you start to wear it, you must do so wholeheartedly. Wearing the Hijab requires the wearer:<p>
    • Not to display their beauty except what is apparent of it.
    • Not showing any hair on the head.
    • Not showing the outline of the figure; no tight clothes.
    • To extend the head coverings (khimars) to cover their bosoms.
    • Not to display their beauty except to their husbands, or their fathers, brothers, uncles, grandfathers (men who cannot marry the Hijab wearer).
    • To draw their outer garments (jilbabs) close around themselves.
  3. In countries where the majority are not Muslims, Be prepared for curiosity. Wearing the Hijab may invite questions from others and may attract discrimination from people who do not understand your choice. Be firm in your faith and reasons for wearing the Hijab. Take this as an opportunity to educate others and explain your beliefs.

Tips

  • Surround yourself with polite and modest friends. The right friends will like you for who you are, and compliment you in public and in private on your strong morals and style.
  • Show off your talents! That is one of the greatest advantages that the Hijab gives to girls who wear it. It gives them the freedom to express themselves in front of people. If you are an amazing speaker, talk and debate in class. If you are great at math or science, answer aloud in class! If you are great at art and painting, display your work! Always strive to be the BEST muslimah you can be!
  • Make sure that the Hijab covers your ears, neck, shoulders, all of your hair, and most of your chest.
  • In public and in private, show a great concern for your appearance. Always wash your hands, and if your Hijab gets messed up, excuse yourself and fix it right away.
  • Try different ways to put on the Hijab. Use different patterns, such as rectangular and square.
  • Be confident in wearing your Hijab! Wearing modest clothes and behaving with class is a privilege that comes from within, it comes with practice, and is a true sign of dignity.
  • Remember that Hijab is not a fashion. It is an act of worship.
  • Always make sure to iron and wash your Hijab! Cleanliness is a virtue and is highly prized, appreciated, and respected in every culture, especially in Islamic ones.

  • Don't think about 'fashion', always wear your hijab properly, don't show half your head or put it behind your ears. Also, do not show your neck and wear tight clothing, and remember it's to not steal attention.
  • Make sure that your Hijab is not see-through!
  • Always stand up straight!
  • Never be a pushover to fit in or to look like everyone else for the sake of fashion. Know and show your own style.
  • Be happy with yourself. People will know that you are a strong person!
  • Always remember to be yourself even in hijab, and you are still the same great muslimah with and without hijab. Be strong, be confident, and be a believer!
  • Remember that Hijab is not intended to draw attention, so go for simple designs in low key colours such as black, brown, grey and dark blue.
  • When wearing a hijab you must show respect to everyone so that they can see the importance of your religion.
  • Wear your hijab for you. Don't wear it because other Muslims are trying to force you into it, otherwise, it's not fun.

Warnings

  • People will ask you some questions. Be prepared for ill-informed comments and attitudes.
  • Along with the cruel comments, there will be glares and "looks". Just smile politely or wave. Stand up straight, speak clearly, and be polite and kind. Many times, these people will feel uncomfortable and embarrassed for being rude.
