Clean Countertops with Natural Products

Cleaning the kitchen countertops the natural way is easy and satisfying. Nobody likes the smell of harsh chemicals, and even less so where food is prepared. Easy-to-make solutions that are both safe and hygienic are probably sitting right in your kitchen cupboard now.

Steps

For Everyday Cleaning

  1. Make up a solution of vinegar and water. Make the mixture one part vinegar to one part water.
  2. Use a reusable cloth, preferably cotton, to wipe down the countertops.
  3. Rinse out the cloth in a quick burst of hot water after use. If possible, hang outdoors or in direct sunlight to disinfect the cloth after use.

Stubborn Stains

  1. Make a paste from baking soda to eliminate stubborn stains. Such stains include coffee rings, dried on food and drink spills that are very sticky.
  2. Combine three parts baking soda with one part water to make the paste.
  3. Apply the baking soda paste with a damp cloth, lightly dampened recycled paper towel or even with your fingers. Allow it to sit for an hour or two so that it can work on the stubborn stain.
  4. Remove with a damp cloth. Rinse the surface of the counter with a fresh cloth, as there will be a residue left after removing it. It is harmless but a little rough to touch if you do not wipe it off completely.

Tips

  • Health food stores also have a wide selection of eco-friendly cleaners that you can use with safety. Be sure, however, to read the labels and do not be tricked by labels that say "natural" or "pure". Read and learn for yourself what ingredients commercial products contain.
  • Have at least 5 cotton cleaning cloths in your kitchen, so that you can rotate them and keep them washed frequently to keep them free of bacteria. Always dry them hanging and stretched out as far as possible. Remember that sunlight is your friend in killing bacteria.
