Clean the Inside of a Bottle
Have you every found an old or unique shaped bottle that you would like to clean the gunk out of the inside and then be able to display it when finished? Or perhaps you would like to reuse your old plastic, lidded, soda bottles over and over to put something like homemade juice or another favorite beverage in to take on the go. How do you clean the inside? This article will show you how to do this very thing simply, and quickly.
Steps
- Obtain an old bottle, or soda bottle (12 to 20 ounce works best).
- Find a source of small gravel smaller than or about the size of pea gravel but larger than sand, and every size in between. You only need a hand full, depending on the size of your bottle.
- Fill the bottle with the gravel to less than ΒΌ full.
- Add three of four drops of dish soap, and fill to nearly the top with water.
- Shake the bottle back and forth and side ways. Use every angle as you shake and swirl it round and round.
- Dump the sand and water mixture and inspect for any missed places. Repeat as needed.
- Rinse the bottle well with clean water.
- Use a brush with soap and water to clean the outside and around the threads and then let dry. If you are going to use it as a beverage container, you can fill it immediately after washing.
- Display or fill bottle and enjoy.
Tips
- Gravel may have sharp edges that can scratch the inside of your bottle when shaken vigorously. Try substituting BB's or heavy beads if you're worried about scratches.
Warnings
- If you are going to drink from this bottle and it makes you feel better use an antibacterial soap, or use one or two drops of bleach and rinse well before refilling.
- Eventually your plastic bottles will get scratched inside causing it to look cloudy. Recycle and get a new bottle. Soda bottles are generally more heavy duty than water bottles so work best for reuse.
- Never dump the gravel from the bottle down the drain, save it for another time or throw it away.
