Configure Mozilla Thunderbird for Yahoo! Mail

This article will explain how to configure Thunderbird with your existing Yahoo Mail account. This article assumes you have the latest Yahoo Mail account and version of Thunderbird. You have a choice of setting the email up using POP (with local mail storage, on your computer) or IMAP (where mail is stored on the Yahoo server and remains accessible from other computers and devices, too).[1]

Steps

Using POP

  1. Sign into your Yahoo Mail account. Click on the gear icon on the top right corner and select "Settings".
  2. Click "Edit" next to your Yahoo Account Settings.
  3. Make sure that the "POP" option is selected. Click "Save," and you can now sign out from your Yahoo Mail account.
  4. Open Mozilla Thunderbird.
  5. Click on "Email" under "Create a new account."
  6. Select "Skip this and use my existing email."
  7. Enter your name, username, and password from Yahoo when asked. Click "Continue".
  8. Choose the "POP3" option if you want to use the POP setup. This will pull your emails from the Yahoo server and store them on your local computer.
  9. Click "Done."
  10. Use your email! Your Yahoo account e-mail will now come up in Thunderbird, along with the "Inbox" and "Trash" folder. Click on your inbox to see your new emails.

Using IMAP

  1. Open Mozilla Thunderbird.
  2. Click on your e-mail as shown on image
  3. Click on "Email" under "Create a new account."
  4. Select "Skip this and use my existing email."
  5. Enter your name, username, and password from Yahoo when asked. Click "Continue".
  6. Choose the "IMAP (remote folders)" option if you want to use the IMAP setup. This will keep your email stored remotely, rather than on your local computer, and will mean that you can access your same emails and folders from other computers, too, rather than having emails only downloaded and stored on your local system.
  7. Use the default settings, or set them up manually if desired. To do a manual configuration, select the "IMAP" option and click on "Manual config."
    • For a manual setup, enter the server settings as follows:
      • Incoming Server: imap.mail.yahoo.com
      • Outgoing Server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
      • Incoming Port: 993 with SSL
      • Outgoing Port: 465 with SSL or port 587 with SSL/TLS
    • Click "Re-test" to make sure the settings are accurate. If it's successful, move on. If not, double-check that you have entered everything correctly.
  8. Click "Done" to save the settings.
  9. Use your email. You'll now find your Yahoo folder set up in Thunderbird!

Tips

  • You have a choice to remember Yahoo's password to access the account. If you prefer not to remember password uncheck the box.
  • If you changed your mind and decided to delete an account follow these few steps:
    • - click on e-mail of the account to be deleted to highlight it,
    • - click on Tools (on tool bar), then Account Settings option,
    • - make sure that "to-be-deleted" account name appears in the window
    • - click on Account Actions, then Remove Account.
  • Don't forget to give Yahoo your phone number because without it, any mail client will never connect to their servers. Data miners always have to have more.
