Convert PDF to Image Files

There are times when a full PDF document is not going to work. It might be more than you need, or you might just need a couple images from the document. This article will guide you through converting your PDFs into image files using Adobe Acrobat, Google, Preview on the Mac, and more. Read on!

Steps

Adobe Acrobat Pro (all computers)

  1. Launch Adobe Acrobat Pro. Note that the free version of Acrobat will not convert PDF files—only the paid-for professional version can do that. For free alternatives to Acrobat Pro, check out the sections below.
  2. Open the PDF file in Acrobat. On menu bar at the top, click on File and a drop-down menu of selections will be displayed.
    • Choose Save As...
    • In the dialog that appears, name your document, and in the "Save as type" menu, choose JPEG, JPEG2000, or PNG.
  3. Click the Save button.

Google Docs

  1. Navigate to Google Drive. Log into your account, and click the Upload icon next to the Create button.
  2. Set the conversion options. In the Upload Settings window, enable all checkboxes. This will convert the file from a PDF to an editable document.
    • Click the Start upload button. When the file is uploaded, click on it to open it in Google Docs.
  3. Download the file. In opened document, click on Google's File menu (not the File menu in the main menu bar). Select Download as, then choose "Microsoft Word." It will save the PDF as a Word .docx file.

Free online conversion services (all computers)

  1. Find a service. Search Google for "convert pdf to image" for a vast array of online file conversion services, most of them for free + advertising. They all work essentially the same way. We'll show you one such services called Zamzar.
  2. Navigate to your chosen service. In this case, it's www.zamzar.com. If not already selected, click on the Convert Files tab or whatever link leads you to the file conversion page on the site.
  3. Click the Choose File button. Locate and open the file or files you wish to convert. (some sites let you upload multiple files, some only single files).
  4. Choose your output type. Choose from the available options—some sites will have just a few options, while others will have a broad array.
  5. Enter your email address. Your converted file will be emailed to you when the process is finished. Times will vary, depending on the quantity and size of the original PDFs.
    • It might be wise to create a new email address for this step, or you could find yourself on a dozen new mailing lists.
  6. Click on the link. When your file's done, you'll receive a link to your files. Click the link, and download your files.

Preview on a Macintosh

  1. Launch Preview. From the File menu, select Open... Locate and open the desired PDF file.
    • Navigate to the page you want to convert to an image file. Note that Preview will export only the current page.
  2. Export the page. From the File menu, select Export...
  3. Set the graphics format. In the resulting Save window, set the location for the file, and choose the desired format from the Format menu.
  4. Adjust the output quality. Depending on the format you choose, you will have a couple options—compression quality, and resolution. Set those as appropriate for your needs.
    • Your document is saved.

Photoshop on a Macintosh (works on a PC too)

  1. Select the unopened PDF file in the finder. Click once to select it, but do not open the file.
  2. From the File menu, select Open With >. This will give you a choice of software applications on your computer that can open a PDF file.
  3. Choose the photo editing application you have installed on your machine. In this example, the file is being opened by Adobe Photoshop CS4.
  4. Select the Images option, and choose the picture you wish to import.
  5. Click OK. Once opened, you can crop, edit, and save the file as desired.
