Cool Your Tongue After Eating Spicy Food

Have you ever eaten something terribly spicy or hot and tried to make it stop? It's not only annoying, it hurts, too. Want to prevent that? You can cool your tongue, for example, by drinking milk or eating ice cream.

Steps

Adding sweetness or saltiness

  1. Before eating the spicy food, eat something sweet and cold, such as ice cream or fruit.
  2. Put sugar in your mouth, and suck on it for about 20 seconds.
  3. Put a pinch or two of salt on your tongue. This will absorb the spiciness.
  4. Eat ice cream or yogurt.
  5. Eat dark chocolate. Milk chocolate will work, but not as well as dark chocolate.
  6. In some cases, chewing sugar-free mint gum can help.

Using liquids

  1. Drink milk or another dairy product. Milk cools the tongue. Whole milk is the best as it has the most fats and fats will coat your tongue and cause the heat level to decrease. Set yourself up with a big glass of milk/milk shake, if you're planning to eat a heaping basket of buffalo wings or other hot-spicy food.
  2. Drink beer. The carbohydrates in the beer also coat your tongue and decrease the heat levels.
  3. Put warm water/coffee on your tongue with a cloth, it does help.

Soothing with baked products

  1. Eat something light and fluffy, such as wheat products, bread, muffins, bagels, etc.
  2. Eat bread or something similar which works because its texture and composition helps it absorb the oiliness of spice.

Easing the pain with fruit or vegetables

  1. Chew a good sized slice of lemon or lime with the skin to take away the spiciness. The oil from the citrus skin will strip the oil of the chili from your tongue.
  2. Eat tomatoes.

Tips

  • Do not drink plain water because water simply spreads the capsaicin around on your tongue.
  • Dairy products and wheat products often work very well.
  • Don't suck out all the slimy saliva!! That helps cool you down too.
  • If you feel tingling and itching on your body, especially on your head, you might be dehydrated. Drink something.
  • The smell of the food can sometimes help you decide if the food is spicy or not, but don't be fooled. Just because it doesn't smell spicy doesn't means its not going to be spicy.
  • Eating more spicy foods can help to get your tongue used to the taste.
