Coordinate Your Outfit

These easy steps will lead you to a perfectly coordinated outfit!

Steps

  1. Pick out your favorite top that's not too colorful or patterned (a t-shirt, blouse... anything you like).
  2. Pick the main color from the shirt - we'll call this your chosen color.
  3. You could select another shirt that matches your chosen color and layer it either underneath or over your top (this would be especially good for winter).
  4. Chose some cool jeans or pants that go with your chosen color and a pair of shoes that go with the style of your outfit (example: skinny jeans go with strappy heels, boots or ballet flats).
  5. Try your outfit with different accessories. Color is the key! Don't just go with one bland color. Mix 'n match bracelets with necklaces; head bands with jewelry - now you've got some funky colors!
  6. If you're wearing a skirt, long socks, footless tights or tights are great!

Tips

  • If you are not a fan of bright colors, you can spice up a neutral color scheme by highlighting one of your best features with a splash of color. If you don't like wearing low-cut shirts, for example, layer something snug-ish and bright under that V-neck.
  • Layering is very effective when your outfit seems too plain or if your shirt is a little too short.
  • Denim jeans go with almost everything.
  • Don't be afraid to add a little personal flair to your look. Add a belt that you made yourself, or that bracelet your best friend gave you. You can also rip your jeans, or embroider something onto a piece of clothing.
  • Try to use bright colors.
  • Dress up a simple tank top with chunky necklaces.
  • Know which colors are hot this season by watching tv or looking at a fashion magazine in the library. (Save your money for buying clothes!)
  • A black skirt goes with everything and makes an essential wardrobe staple.

Warnings

  • Don't look too tacky! It's always good to pick out things that go together.
  • Don't try to fit in with everyone. Remember, be the leader not the follower. Fads come and go as soon as everyone has them. If you must do the fad thing, add a hat to it when it goes out of style or a sash, belt, or even new accessories that go with your look. You will be able to get away with last month's jeans, last week's shoes, and last year's necklace, take it from someone who knows!
  • Don't layer too much, this can make you appear bigger than you are.
  • Don't just stick with colors that go with you--you can either go with the flow or you can go wild. Don't be boring, remember to be yourself, and since there is no one that is exactly like you, you will definitely stand out. Although you should stock up on colors that compliment your skin tone, don't be afraid to toe the line. It is also important that you wear colors that complement your features. Choose different shades of non-complementary colors if you want to--your fashion is all about you--but use them in moderation. For example, if orange is your favorite color but doesn't look good with your skin tone, maybe wear an orange belt with a blue shirt, or any other color that both looks good with orange and looks good on you.
