Cover Refrigerator Shelves in Plastic Wrap

Keep your refrigerator clean and sticky-free by covering the shelves in plastic wrap. Spills are no problem, especially from items that leave sugary, sticky or bloody residues on the shelves. By using the wrap, shelves can be cleaned quickly and hygienically without scrubbing or scraping.

Steps

Applying the first round of wrap

  1. Remove all of the food from each refrigerator shelf.
  2. Clean the shelves and interior of your refrigerator using a mild detergent mixed with lukewarm water.
  3. Rinse the soap after washing the interior of the fridge.
  4. Dry all the surfaces before proceeding, to avoid the growth of mold and to ensure that the plastic adheres properly.
  5. Pull out a sheet of plastic wrap that is large enough to cover the first shelf. The type of plastic wrap that advertises a “press and seal” method is the easiest type with which to line the fridge shelves.
  6. Apply the plastic to the top of the shelf and smooth it down with your hands. Wrap enough plastic to make a complete loop around the shelf.
  7. Continue to apply plastic wrap to each of the fridge shelves.

Replacing wrap on the shelves

Change the plastic wrap when food spills on it.

  1. Remove all the items from the soiled shelf.
  2. Pull the plastic wrap up or peel it off if you’ve used a “press and seal” type.
  3. Place the used plastic wrap in the recyclable bin or trash can.
  4. Apply a new piece of “press and seal” plastic to the shelf.
  5. Wipe down the outsides of the jars and bottles you removed and put them back on the cleanly wrapped shelf.

Tips

  • Wash all bottles and jars before you put them back on the refrigerator shelf.

Warnings

  • This method will make clean up time shorter and easier, but it is not an environmentally-friendly choice, even if you're recycling the plastic wrap after it is used. You may like to consider simply wiping spills off first to see if they come off easily; if they do, the wrap gets to be useful for a while longer. Additionally, creating a favorable environment for mold formation and germ collection may be a health concern especially in a commercial setting.

Things You’ll Need

  • Plastic wrap
  • Bowl (for detergent and warm water)
  • Dishcloth or sponge
  • Plastic wrap (the type that presses and seals)
