Create a Bed Canopy Without Posts

Don't waste thousands on an elaborate, over-priced bed. With a few pieces of fabric and some household tools, you can create an amazing bed canopy to give the illusion of that coveted "four poster" look.

Steps

  1. Make a small hole in the ceiling above the bed and a few inches out from each corner of the bed. This will allow the material to hang clear of the mattress. The holes should be large enough to hold a wall anchor securely.
  2. Use a hammer and tap a wall anchor into each hole, and then screw a hook into each anchor without over-tightening.
  3. Hang curtain rings on each hook.
  4. Starting with the first ring, knot the fabric to the ring using one piece of material (length), then drape across to the other ring and knot.
  5. Using one short piece of material, knot the fabric to the ring and drape across (width) to the other ring and knot.
  6. Repeat for the last two rings.
  7. Using the vertical pieces of materials. Knot to each ring and allow to fall to floor creating a pool effect.

Tips

  • Repeat above step to measure width. Don't forget to double measure!
  • You will want to achieve a soft look for the canopy effect. If pulled too tight around the top, the canopy will lose its soft look.
  • Add a little extra length to each measurement to allow for fastening to rings.
  • Use string again to measure vertical from floor to ceiling and include excess drape on the floor. Times measurement by three.
  • The vertical pieces of material should be able to fall to the floor as free as possible creating a pool effect on the floor.
  • Use string to measure amount of material needed. Attach string to one ring and drape lengthwise of the bed to the other end. Take down and measure, then double it.

Things You'll Need

  • Fabric such as curtain or bedding materials
  • 4 decorative hooks and curtain rings.
  • 4 anchors of suitable size to screw into hooks.
