Create a Capsule Wardrobe

A 'capsule wardrobe' is a relatively small collection of clothes that all work together, and can be worn on all occasions. It's about quality, not quantity, and finding what suits you. A lot of people have large, unorganized wardrobes, made up of mismatched clothes bought over the years, most of which they have no passion for. The point of a capsule wardrobe is to have only clothes you love, and that you look good in. In theory, every top should go with every bottom.

Steps

  1. Find out what suits your shape. This is the most important thing when it comes to buying clothes. What shape are you?
  2. Determine if you have a Pear-Shaped Body. Your breasts are smaller than your hips, and you have a waist.
    • Wear fitted blouses with patterns/pockets, etc. over your breasts, wide necklines, any jeans and trousers, cropped jackets and cardigans and A-line skirts.
  3. Determine if you are an Upside-down triangle. Your breasts are bigger than your hips, and you don't have much of waist.
    • Wear any trousers or jeans except skinny jeans, full and flaring skirts, baby-doll tops, belted coats, bright eye-catching shoes, low V-necks and dresses that cinch in at the waist and flare out at the hips . Avoid strappy tops and dresses.
  4. Determine if you have a Rectangle-shaped body. Your breasts are the same size as your hips, and you don't have much of waist.
    • Wear low v-necks, any trousers and jeans but especially flares, pieces that cinch in below the bust or around the waist, full skirts, shoulder pads, shirts and tops with detail around the bust, and coats that flare out at from the waist.
  5. Determine if you have an Hourglass-shaped body. Your breasts are the same size as your hips, and you have a waist.
    • Wear anything with belted waist, wrap tops and dresses, almost any skirt or pair of trousers.
  6. Determine if you have an Apple-shaped body. Your breasts are bigger than your hips, and you have no waist.
    • Wear fitted tops and dresses, solid dark colours, low v-necks, empire cut tops, straight, wide and flare leg trousers and jeans, single breasted coats and jackets, and full skirts.
  7. Find out what colours suit you. This depends upon the colour of your skin, hair and eyes.
    • Fair skin and fair hair. Pale skin ~ blue, green or hazel eyes ~ blonde, ginger or light brown hair.

  8. Find out what suits your personality. Just because something flatters your figure and suits you doesn't mean you have to buy it. Make sure that you also like it, and like what it says about you. Are you sophisticated, chic, girly, fun, playful, sensual, seductive, bohemian, smart...? The list goes on. Let your clothes tell others a little bit about yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • A little black dress. Every woman should own one, and a good one can be work for work or in the evening. Also, black is slimming.
  • A day-dress. Something very casual and comfy. It's easier to put on and comfier to wear than a tracksuit, but you'll look feminine, and like you put in some effort.
  • Three plain t-shirts. These are a must for any capsule wardrobe. Buy t-shirts made of quality material, and buy all three in either different colours of different shades.
  • A nice top, for all occasions.
  • A fitted white shirt. Another that piece for two occasions - for work, or, when teamed with jeans, for a relaxed week-end look.
  • A neutral coloured cashmere jumper. This will add a touch of class to any outfit - comfortable but stylish, feminine but doesn't show of too much skin.
  • A classic black blazer.
  • A trench coat. This is another classic piece, that will never go out of style. It can be worn from season to season, and adds sophistication to any look. If beige is one of your colours, get it in beige!
  • A skirt. See the first step in this article to see what kind of skirt will suit your shape. Don't buy something too short or frilly - choose something that you'd be happy going to work in, but also with some sex-appeal for going out in the evenings.
  • A pair of jogging bottoms. The perfect thing to wear when you're exercising. (If you don't exercise, then start!) Team with a t-shirt.
  • A pair of jeans. Jeans are most definitely an essential part of any wardrobe. When buying jeans, don't look for trends (e.g. rips and tears) but for quality and comfort, and for what flatters your shape.
  • A pair of tailored trousers. Depending on what you team these with, they can be worn for work or for an evening.
  • A pair of trainers. Do not buy big, clunky trainers, but a nice and decisively feminine pair.
  • A pair of ballet flats.
  • A pair of patent-leather court shoes. Add length to your legs and sex-appeal to any look.
