Crochet a Snowman
A fun and very simple project for a special child in your life. This crocheted snowman is suitable for use as a toy, stocking filler or decoration for the Christmas tree. This project is aimed at intermediate to advanced crocheters, as it requires an intuitive understanding of the use of crochet stitches to shape the body.
Steps
- Start with four chain stitches. Join them to form a circle.
- Work some double crochet into the circle. This is to start the head.
- Go right around the circle. Join it up. Slip stitch through, making one chain and starting on the next row.
- Shape the head.
- The head is shaped by increasing and decreasing the stitches.
- Increase the stitches for the head and work straight. Then decrease the stitches to create the neck.
- Create the body. Increase to start the body of the little snowman. Continue crocheting to make the length of the body.
- Fill the body of the snowman. Fill it lightly. Shape the snowman and stitch together at the base.
- Crochet the accessories. Using this photo as a guide, crochet these features:
- a little hat
- a scarf
- a broomstick
- Embroider the eyes, nose, mouth and buttons. Attach these items with simple sewing stitches.
Tips
- This snowman makes an excellent, lightweight tree-hanging decoration. Thread some yarn into the hat and tie firmly in a loop for hanging.

- Yarn - white for body, red for scarf, green for hat and brown for broom (vary colours as desired)
