Curl Your Hair With Aluminum Foil

Curling your hair is now simpler and cheaper! Following these easy steps below, you can achieve soft, luscious curls with the use of aluminum foil. Using this method, curls can be achieved in the same amount of time it would take using a regular curling method (rollers, pins, etc), but without the expensive price tag. Adults or those familiar with a hair straightener are recommended to use these instructions.

Steps

  1. Gather all the materials listed below to have everything on hand and ready to go. Neglecting this step may result in panic and uncertainty of what to do.

Preparing the Aluminum Foil and Hair Straightener

  1. Plug in the straightener and turn it on to the maximum heat setting. Be sure it is far from any sources of water or flammable objects.
  2. Take a roll of aluminum foil and tear out six sheets, each {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} long.
    • As an alternative to this preparation, pre-cut pieces of aluminum foil can be found online or in beauty stores.
    • If you have textured, thick hair, tear out seven or eight sheets of aluminum foil instead of six.
  3. Once you have all six sheets, stack them on top of each other. From there, cut the stack into 4 equal sections

Preparing the Hair

  1. Start with completely dry, brushed hair. Be sure no part of it is wet or tangled. If you find wet strands, dry them with a hair dryer and brush it out.
  2. Using hair clips, section off the hair by following the steps below:
    • Start with the top section of hair (the hair above the tops of the ears) and clip it back.
    • Next, grab the hair from the top of the ear to the bottom of the ear (middle section of the hair), and clip it back.
    • Finally, separate the remainder of the hair (bottom section of the hair) into two or four sections - depending on the thickness of your hair.
  3. After your hair has been sectioned off, take a can of hairspray and spray the bottom sections of your hair (the strands not clipped up). Once all parts of the bottom sections have been sprayed, securely wrap one of the sections around your fingers and wait a minute or two.
  4. Carefully remove your fingers from the wrapped hair, and repeat the step above to each of the other unclipped sections until you have reached the root of the hair

Putting Aluminum in Hair

  1. Hold the roll of hair with one hand, and place the aluminum foil underneath the rolled hair.
  2. Fold the aluminum foil up and over the roll of hair.
  3. Secure the curl in place by folding both sides of the foil inwards.
  4. Continue this process throughout the entire head, moving to the middle section of hair, and finally, the top section of hair.

Flat iron the Aluminum

  1. With the now heated hair straightener, find where the curl is in the aluminum foil and carefully clamp the flat iron on the curl.
  2. Keep the flat iron on the hair for only a few seconds and then remove.
    • Any contact with the aluminum foils will result in burnt skin!
  3. Continue flat ironing the rest of the curls

Removing the Foil

  1. Wait until all of the foils have completely cooled off and are cold to the touch. It may take five to ten minutes, depending on how hot they are. If you aren't sure whether they are safe to remove or not, quickly poke them with your finger to test their heat. If they are still hot, wait a little longer.
  2. Start unwrapping the bottom section's foils and gently pulling out the aluminum.
  3. Unwrap the middle and top sections until all of the foils are taken out.

Finishing Touches

  1. After taking out all of the foils, apply hair spray evenly onto your hair.
  2. Start pulling out each single curl to get neat curls

Tips

  • If you have issues there is a video on YouTube (link provided below) that shows exactly how to do these steps.
  • Some hair salons utilize this technique themselves. If you are having trouble doing this yourself, look into which ones near you offer this service

Warnings

  • As previously stated, upon heating the curls while they are wrapped in the aluminum foil, the aluminum foil becomes very hot. DO NOT let the heated aluminum touch your skin, as it will burn it!
