Curl Hair with Rags

Hate using the curling iron to curl your hair? Does the heat fry your hair? Sick of the same old thing? Curling your hair with rags doesn't require heat or electricity, and still makes beautiful curls. Additionally, it is eco-friendly! Follow the guide below, or watch the video!

Steps

  1. Wash your hair well, use leave-in conditioner, and comb through hair thoroughly. Ragging works best on wet (not soaking) hair.
  2. Tear an old sheet or other soft cloth into strips. These strips can be from {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} wide and from {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} long, depending on the type of curls desired. A 1" x 12" rag will generally make a tighter curl than a 5" x 18" rag. It's advisable to make a variety of sizes so you don't get frustrated if your hair does not take the thin 1" x 12" rags. An old t-shirt can also make great results.
  3. Separate your hair in the back as if you were going to do a double braid. Slip one side in a loose side ponytail.
  4. Grasp the end of a strand of hair with the center of the rag folded over it.
  5. Curl the strand around the rag to the underneath and add conditioner to it (spread some over the hair whilst wrapped in the rag).
  6. Tie the loose ends of the rag on top when you reach the scalp. Tie a very tight knot and you will get the best results wanted.
  7. Repeat this method around the head. Make several layers of curls if the hair is thick or long.
  8. When the hair is completely dry, take out the rags. Don't take the rags out if they are wet. If you do, the curls will not stay in the hair.
  9. Style the curls and comb through the conditioner which will make it look shiny and pretty!
  10. Now you're set to go with a full head of curls!

Tips

  • Keep the rags in for a long time to allow your curls to be very curly.
  • Do not brush the curls, use your fingers or a wide tooth comb to separate them!
  • You can sleep on your ragged hair or blow dry it.
  • These curls are better than a curling iron because they have more body!
  • Have a curling iron on hand to fix any straight pieces (which often happens).
  • Use curl enhancer before you curl your hair.
  • Paper towels are also great for this!
  • Try strips of thick fleece.
  • You can also use paper bags instead of rags.
  • Make sure you stay as still as possible while it's being done to make the neatest and curliest curls.

Warnings

  • The result will vary on different people and hair types.
  • Conditioner may leave hair weighted down or greasy.
  • Thick hair may become frizzy and thicker.
