Cut the Sides of a Bob Haircut

This is the third article in my series on how to properly give a client a bob haircut. The other articles in the series can be viewed in the related articles section below. In this article, you will learn how to connect the back of the haircut to both sides, and how to finish cutting both sides of the haircut.

Steps

  1. Begin by reviewing the previous article, How to Cut the Back of a Bob Haircut. A link is posted in the related articles section below.
  2. Now, connect the back and side sections. Take horseshoe shaped sections from the high crown to the parietal ridge, as shown in the image at right. Begin with a low section.
  3. Comb down the section. Separate the hair that you've combed down into half inch sections (there should be three to five, one or two behind the ear, one over the ear, one or two in front of the ear). Connect the sections. When cutting the section over the ear, make sure to use very little tension, as the hair laying over the ear will have less weight.
  4. If you would like to add a fringe (bangs) to your bob, go to my article How to Cut a Fringe for a Bob Haircut. If not, go to my article How to Finish and Style Bob Haircuts.
  5. Continue to comb down sections on the same side until you reach the middle (or off-center parting). Comb down fully from this point and re-check your connection.
  6. Do the same on the other side.
  7. If you would like to add a fringe (bangs) to your bob, proceed to my article How to Cut a Fringe for a Bob Haircut. If you would not like to add a fringe skip to my article How to Finish and Style a Bob Haircut.
