Do Visual Kei Makeup

So you love J-rock? Some of the best music you've ever heard was from a bunch of people that are men, and resemble cross-dressers? To get this style takes a lot of creativity and practice. It also takes patience.

Steps

  1. Start with a clean slate. Make sure that your face is as squeaky clean as possible. If you don't, you could be setting yourself up for disaster with applying makeup to a dirty face, which will most likely absorb the makeup and oils into the pores, and cause possible breakouts.
  2. After you make sure that your face is absolutely clean, the oils are gone, and there is no dead skin anywhere, apply foundation. You want foundation that matches your skin tone, not something that only makes your face pale-looking.
  3. Concealer! Okay, some people have really bad dark circles. It would be best to cover these with something not too light, because if it's too light, it'll attract attention there, and it won't look natural. Just try something that's possibly a little lighter than your foundation. If you have no concealer, it's recommended to just use foundation to the best of your ability.
  4. Now, when you're done with everything, powder it down! If you don't, within half the day your foundation with have gone and absorbed into your pores, and it won't show. So! Hold it there by lightly dusting your face with some powder, about the same color as your foundation.
  5. Now for your eyes. With this, you can be really creative. At first, you'll want to take the pencil eyeliner and line the top lid of your eye. If you want to make fully black lined lids, then go over most of your top lid with liquid eyeliner, covering the shape of your eye.
  6. When you're done with that, add a fun shadow to your eyes, whether you want it to match what you're wearing or whatever you think is good by lining the outer part of the black, most likely on top.
  7. If you shave your eyebrows, draw them in at this point. Try to make them accentuate your face to the best of your ability, whether they are full brows or slants.
  8. Now, if you'd like, you can apply stickers, gems, or false eyelashes. Remember not to use too much eyelash glue. Make sure the decals are secured.
  9. Finally, the lips. If you want, you can line them with a dark shade to make your lips look full. Shading is a good makeup technique, you have to put the darkest shade near the corners of your mouth. Gradually as you near the center, it should lighten to whatever lip shade you're wearing - or your natural lip colour.
  10. Now, you're done with your makeup, and you can go change into your clothing and do your hair!

Tips

  • The magazine Cure has Style Council makeup guides which are pretty good.
  • Watch YouTube videos under 'visual kei makeup' if you need help.
  • Be open minded.
  • Try deviantArt for Visual Kei makeup guides.
  • Be creative.
  • If you're allowed, try dyeing your hair (if you've never bleached it before, go to a hairdresser's rather than attempt it yourself. If you don't have the money for that, try a student hair salon! They're very cheap and always very careful with their customer's hair, though slower than professionals). Any natural or crazy colour is fantastic, but why not be creative and try, say, a natural coloured upper layer with a bright neon underneath? Or half your hair one colour, and the other half another?

Warnings

  • Be prepared to be mistaken for people's misunderstandings, like being called a "Goth", "scene", or "emo" by people.
  • Be patient with them, and explain that it's a style they've probably never heard of.
  • DON'T try to become a visual kei overnight. Your mother will probably have a heart attack. It's a slow, developing process.
  • Prepare for criticism. Remember not to take it so hard!
