Do Your Hair Like a Dancer

Most dancers are required to put their hair into a bun before all classes. Here is an awesome way to do your hair. If done properly, it will stay up all day!

Steps

Making a Bun with a Hairnet

  1. Pull all your hair back into a tight ponytail, high on the back of your head.secure with a hair elastic
  2. Grasp your ponytail in your hand and begin to twist the hair to the left as you would ring out a towel.
  3. Wrap your hair tightly in a counterclockwise circle around the ponytail holder. Continue twisting until all hair is coiled.
  4. Put another ponytail holder around the bun and the loose ends of the ponytail. An optional method is to skip the second ponytail holder and pin as you go, adding pins approximately every 90 degrees.
  5. Take out the hair net and pull it so that it's open and flat.
  6. Hook one end of the hairnet around the top of your bun.
  7. Pull the hairnet down over your bun.
  8. Twist the hairnet once.
  9. Wrap the hairnet back up over your bun.
  10. Repeat the last three steps until you run out of hairnet. Wrap remaining hairnet around the rim of the bun.
  11. Take a pin and stick it into the side of the bun. Make sure the pin is angled toward the center of the bun (but not your scalp!).
  12. Repeat with as many pins as you wish. Shake your head to test the tightness of your bun.
  13. Secure away any loose strands of hair with extra bobby/hair pins.
  14. Dance away!

Making a Bun

  1. Brush your hair back into a tight ponytail, with or without a side part and secure with a hair tie.
  2. Separate your hair into two equal sections.
  3. Twist one section tightly and pin a small small portion into the holder. Continue for maybe two inches.
  4. Copy the above step with the other section
  5. Alternate between the two sections until you are finished.
  6. The longer you pin the hair the farther away from the tie you are.
  7. The finished product should look similar to a cinnamon roll.

Making a bun with a sock

  1. Put your hair in a firm ponytail.
  2. Get a sock. Cut the toe end off the sock. Roll it up.
  3. Slide the sock around the ponytail.
  4. Put all your hair around the sock.
  5. Secure with bobby pins. Also pin up any loose ends with bobby pins.

Tips

  • Wet hair makes this easier. Hairspray and gel can help as well. So does dirty greasy hair (makes it easier to stay up).
  • You can braid the hair to wrap around if you have layers that are hard to keep in the twist or if your hair is extremely long (waist length or longer).
  • If your pins keep popping out of your bun, try securing less hair with each pin.
  • Twisting direction (clockwise or counterclockwise)it does not matter.
  • The tighter you keep your hair as you twist and wrap your hairnet, the more secure your bun will be. A tight ponytail to begin with is also important.
  • For performances: If you need to have a part on one side of your head in addition to the bun, it can be helpful to use contour clips to pull unwilling hair towards the side of your head.
  • If you are going to dance class that doesn't require a very secure bun, you can use a simple scrunchy instead of nets and pins.
  • Take out the hairnet beforehand to make it easier when putting up the bun.
  • If you do this lesson and you start pulling tiny strands of hair you'll have an instant messy bun.
  • For thicker hair, try separating the ponytail hair into two strands, and twisting one strand around, pinning it, and then twisting the other. It helps to pin as you go with this method.

Warnings

  • Be sure not to pull the hairnet too hard to get a tight bun, as they are fragile and rip easily.
  • Be careful when inserting pins (especially if you are doing someone else's bun) that you do not jab them into their scalp.

Things You'll Need

  • Hair net -- Preferably a color similar to your own hair color. The smaller the holes, the fewer fly-aways.
  • Bobby pins -- There are many types. Experiment to learn which work best for you.
  • Ponytail holder(s) -- Choose a color that won't stand out too much.
  • Hairspray -- For fly-aways.
