Effectively Train a Killer Whale
It can be very fun but challenging to train an Orca or a killer whale. The job may be difficult but it is very rewarding.
Steps
- Figure out a clear cut goal which can be described as actions the animal must perform. Don’t use vague requests like "be good".
- Figure out how to break the pathway to the final goal into easily achieved mini-goals or steps by going slow.
- Be positive and happy when training the Orca. Reward good behavior and completed tricks immediately.
- If your Orca makes mistakes, it is crucial to ignore them and encourage the animal to continue. Gradually increase your standard for performance. Give rewards randomly only about one-third of the time.
- Repeat the process, adding steps to each performance of mini-goals.
Tips
- Reward with fish for good behavior.
- Come up with signals that go with the command.
- Ignore any mistakes the whale makes.
