Enjoy a Houseboat Ride on the Kerala Backwaters

Traveller Magazine, published by National Geographic, names Kerala as one of the ten paradises on Earth. A houseboat ride in one of the paradises on Earth shows exactly why Kerala is God's Own Country.

Steps

  1. Research on houseboat operators in the Alappuzha district and fix the travel dates. A houseboat ride would be an extolling experience if undertaken during the monsoon season.
  2. If you are not an Indian, get a tourist visa from the nearest Indian Embassy/Consulate.
  3. Fly to the Cochin International Airport (COK) from any cities in India or abroad. Kochi (Cochin) is well connected by roads, rail and by air to all major Indian cities.
  4. Take a cab to the famed Alappuzha district, dubbed the Venice of the East. The distance is about {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} from the airport.
  5. Meet your houseboat operator and ensure that a chef/cook is available with you on the ride.
  6. As boat travels along the backwaters, enjoy the view of the low hanging coconut palms, the birds that visit the fields and the folk songs of the rice plantation workers.
  7. Enjoy the Kerala cuisine cooked by your on board chef and drink fresh toddy in the monsoon.

Tips

  • Ask for pearl spot fish baked in plantain leaves.
  • Drink toddy fresh from the coconut tree (if available).
  • Pack plenty of loose cotton clothes. It can be very humid.
