Export Bookmarks from Chrome

This article teaches you how to download your Google Chrome bookmarks as a file. After doing so, you can add your Chrome bookmarks to any browser by uploading (or "importing") the bookmarks file.

Steps

Exporting Your Chrome Bookmarks

  1. Open the Google Chrome browser. If your bookmarks are saved to a specific Google account, you'll need to sign into that account in order to display them.
  2. Click . It's in the top right corner of the Chrome browser window.
  3. Select Bookmarks. You should see a new menu pop up to the left.
  4. Click Bookmark Manager. This will open a new window (the "Bookmark Manager") which allows you to organize and manage your existing bookmarks.
    • You can also go directly to your Bookmark Manager by pressing Option+ Command+B on Mac, or Ctrl+ Shift+O on Windows.
  5. Click Organize. This button is located in the top center of your screen below the search bar, and has a small black triangle next to it.
  6. Select Export bookmarks to HTML file. Your computer will usually prompt you to choose a save location at this point.
  7. Choose a name and a location for your bookmarks file. The "Save As" window that pops up after you click to export will prompt you to decide on a name for the file and a location. Pick a location and name that will be recognizable to you and easy to find later.
    • By default, your exported bookmarks file is titled with the word 'bookmarks" and the current date.
  8. Click Save. Your bookmarks file should begin downloading immediately.
    • The default save location for Google Chrome is the Chrome-installed "Downloads" folder.

Syncing Bookmarks on Mobile

  1. Sync bookmarks on Safari for iPhone. Safari on iPhone and iPad is able to automatically sync with your Safari desktop bookmarks. In order to have it do so, you simply have to allow the sync in your device settings. To do this:
    • Open your iPhone's Settings.
    • Scroll down and tap iCloud.
    • Make sure the switch next to Safari is green (if not, slide it right).
    • If you want to move bookmarks from Chrome (desktop) over to Safari on iPhone, the easiest method is to first sync the bookmarks on desktop, then to sync Safari desktop with Safari mobile.
    • You will need to be signed into the same Apple ID on both your desktop Safari and your iPhone for this to work.
  2. Sync bookmarks on Chrome's mobile browser. To do this, you'll need to do the following:
    • Open your Chrome app.
    • Tap in the top right corner of the screen.
    • Sign into your Google account if prompted.
    • Tap Bookmarks.
    • Tap in the top left corner of the screen.
    • Select Bookmarks Bar.
    • For this to work you will need a Google account to which you're signed in on your desktop version of Chrome.
  3. Sync bookmarks on Firefox's mobile browser. Register a free account with Firefox and gain access to auto-syncing with your Firefox mobile app.
    • If you want to move bookmarks from Chrome (desktop) over to Firefox mobile, the easiest method is to first sync the bookmarks on desktop separately, then to sync your bookmarks on Firefox desktop with Firefox mobile.

Importing Bookmarks in Chrome Desktop

  1. Open the Chrome browser. Depending on the account to which you want your bookmarks saved, you may have to sign into with your Google account email address and password first.
  2. Click . It's in the top right corner of the Chrome browser window.
  3. Hover over Bookmarks. When you do this another menu will appear to the left.
  4. Click Bookmark Manager.
  5. Click Organize. This button is located in the top center of your screen below the search bar, and has a small black triangle next to it.
  6. Click Import Bookmarks from HTML.
  7. Select your bookmarks .html file. It should be in the location in which you saved it (e.g., the Downloads folder).
  8. Click Open. Your Chrome bookmarks should now be updated.

Importing Bookmarks in Safari Desktop

  1. Open Safari. Safari is able to import bookmarks from either an .html bookmarks file you've previously exported or to directly sync with another browser on your computer.
  2. Click the File menu. It's located in the top right section of your screen.
  3. Click Import Bookmarks.
  4. Click Import From.
  5. Click Bookmarks from HTML file. You can also choose to import bookmarks directly from another browser on your computer (e.g. Chrome or Firefox).
    • To sync bookmarks with another browser, select that browser and confirm the syncing details.
  6. Select your bookmarks .html file. It should be in the location in which you saved it (e.g., the Downloads folder).
  7. Click Import. Your bookmarks should upload to Safari.

Importing Bookmarks in Firefox Desktop

  1. Open the Firefox browser.
  2. Click Bookmarks. This should be at the top of the Firefox window. If you don't see this option, press your computer's Alt key to display it.
  3. Click Show All Bookmarks. The "Library" window should pop up when you do this.
    • You can also hold down Ctrl+ Shift ( Command+ Shift for Mac users) and tap B to open the Show All Bookmarks window directly.
  4. Click Import and Backup. It's at the top of the Library window.
  5. Click Import Bookmarks from HTML.
  6. Select your bookmarks .html file. It should be in the location in which you saved it (e.g., the Downloads folder).
  7. Click Open. Your selected bookmarks should begin uploading to Firefox immediately.

Importing Bookmarks in Internet Explorer 11 Desktop

  1. Update Internet Explorer. Older versions of Internet Explorer may have a slightly different procedure for importing bookmarks, so it's always a good idea to update your software.
  2. Open the Internet Explorer browser.
  3. Click File. It's in the top left corner of your Explorer window. If you don't see this option, tap your computer's Alt key to force it to appear.
  4. Click Import and Export.
  5. Select Import from a file. You can also choose to import directly from the Chrome browser if you wish.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Click the Favorites box. This will ensure that your selected file has permission to apply your Chrome bookmarks (or "favorites") to Internet Explorer.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Click Browse. Doing so will allow you to locate your bookmarks folder.
  10. Select your bookmarks folder. This should be in the location to which you saved it.
  11. Click Open. Your bookmarks folder should appear in the file name bar on this page.
  12. Click Next. This will add your Google Chrome bookmarks to your Internet Explorer browser.

Importing Bookmarks in Opera Desktop

  1. Open the Opera browser. If your version of Opera is out of date, it should update itself automatically.[1]
  2. Click the Menu button. It's in the top left corner of the Opera window.
  3. Select Select More Tools. You should see a pop-out menu appear.
  4. Click Import bookmarks and Settings.
  5. Click the "From" bar. Doing so will give you a list of locations from which you can import bookmarks.
  6. Select Bookmarks HTML file. You can also import your bookmarks directly from Chrome by clicking the Chrome option here.
  7. Click Choose File.
  8. Select your HTML bookmarks file. It should be in the location to which you saved it (e.g., desktop or the Downloads folder).
  9. Click Open. Your selected bookmarks should now be accessible in Opera.

Tips

  • Mobile versions of Chrome cannot "export" bookmarks, but you can access your bookmarks by signing into your Google account.
