Fix a Broken Fan Control Switch in a 1998 2001 Intrepid
If the fan switch only runs on "high" it is not the control switch, it is the resistor. First step in the manuals will tell you to pull the control switch and check for continuity. . . because the resistor is bad the reading will show "no continuity" except on "high", but there is nothing wrong with the switch. Resistor change takes 20-30 minutes, one tool and should be less than $20.00.
Steps
- Contact the Parts Department at your local Dodge Dealer to make sure they have the part. If not, order it. The resistor is a dealer part only.
- Buy the resistor
- Under the passenger side dash, above where your feet would be, remove the air duct section (approx. 2 ft long). You may need a screwdriver to pry one end out.
- Resistor is the only White part under the dash.
- Unplug wire harness from the resistor
- With small socket and driver, remove two side nuts attaching resistor to the housing.
- Remove resistor.
- Replace resistor with new and attach nuts to housing
- Plug in harness
- Replace air duct
- Project completed.
Tips
- Check socket size, it is small
- Have small hands, it is in a tight area
- This is a do it yourself project that will save you a lot of money.
Warnings
- For extra safety, Chilton's suggests you disconnect the battery to dis-engage the airbag system.
Things You'll Need
- 7mm and 6mm sockets.
- Wrench or driver.
