Free Mount a Unicycle
Unicycling is very fun, and what's more, people will be amazed when you walk out of your house with a unicycle, hop on, and ride away. This wikiHow will teach you how to hop on so you can do just that.
Steps
- Get a unicycle.
- The unicycle you pick should have a seat that is just below your belly button (at the lowest part of the seat).
- Unicycles with 20" wheels are recommended for learning how to ride.
- Learn how to pedal a unicycle.
- Learn how to mount using a fence or post before trying to free mount.
- You should be able to consistently pedal at least 3 rotations without holding on to anything.
- Stand the unicycle on flat, even grass. Keep the right pedal at a 9:00 position, and the left pedal at a 3:00 position. Make sure both pedals are parallel to the ground.
- The right pedal should be at the back.
- Tilting the seat backwards, while keeping the pedals at their positions, and put the seat between your legs. Place your right foot on the right pedal, and put your dominant hand on the front of the seat.
- Bend your left leg slightly, and jump up using your left leg. Place your foot on the left pedal. The momentum from the jump should carry your seat (and you) to an upright position above the wheel. Your weight should momentarily be on your hand, until you adjust yourself and take a seat. This should all take about 3 seconds.
- Make sure you are putting no weight on the right pedal. The wheel should hardly move. Pretend that you have an egg under your right foot.
- Start pedaling forwards. If you can already ride pretty well, but have to mount using something, it should take no more than half an hour for you to be taking a pedal or two. After another half hour, you should be well on your way to being able to consistently free mount!
- If you do not know how to ride, do not be discouraged if you continually get up then fall off - at that point you probably are mounting properly, but need more practice when actually riding.
