Get Free iTunes Music

This article teaches you how to listen to free music in iTunes with Beats 1 Radio or by downloading free mp3s from the web. Though iTunes no longer offers its own free downloads or custom radio stations (Apple Music replaced these in 2016), these options should fill the free tunes void.

Steps

Listening to Beats 1 Radio on an iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Music app. It’s the music note icon at the bottom right corner of the screen.
    • Beats 1 Radio is iTunes’ only remaining free radio station. It’s available 24 hours a day and has a wide variety of scheduled radio shows.[1]
  2. Tap Radio. It’s at the bottom of the screen.[2]
  3. Tap the image under “Beats 1 on Air.” The image varies depending on what show is now playing on Beats 1 radio. As soon as you tap the image, the station will play.[3]

Finding Free Music to Download

  1. Visit a website that offers free downloadable mp3s. Though you can no longer download free music within iTunes, you can still download mp3s from other sites and listen to them in iTunes.
    • BandCamp, DatPiff, PureVolume, and Jamendo are all music download sites that let you download safe, free mp3 files you can listen to in iTunes.[4]
    • Music blogs often offer free mp3s (high-quality music files at the smallest possible file size) of songs or albums they review. Search the web for genres of music you like and “music blog.” For example, search “hip hop music blog” to find bloggers who review hip hop music.
  2. Download the mp3 files to your computer. Most sites have a button or link that says “Download.” Once you click the link, you’ll be able to choose a folder on your device to save the file. Choose a folder you’ll remember, as you’ll need it in a moment.
    • Never download files from a site you don’t trust. See How to Download Free Music for tips on making sure your music downloads are safe.
  3. Open iTunes. If you’re on a Mac, it’s the music note icon in the dock at the bottom of the screen. If you have Windows, click the Start menu (the Windows icon at the bottom left corner of the screen) and scroll down until you find iTunes.
    • If you’re new to iTunes, check out How to Use iTunes for tips on getting started with the program.
  4. Select “Music” from the dropdown menu. It’s at the top left corner of iTunes.
  5. Click Library. It’s at the top center area of iTunes.
  6. Import your music into iTunes.[5]
    • macOS: Click the File menu and select Add to Library. Browse to the folder to which you saved your new music files and click Open. The files will be added to iTunes.
    • Windows: Click the File menu and select Add Folder to Library. Navigate to the folder to which you saved your new music files and click Select Folder. The songs will copy to your library.
  7. Double-click a song to listen. The music file will play immediately.
    • Sometimes mp3s downloaded from the internet are not tagged with the proper artist and song titles. If you don’t “Unknown Artist” or “Unknown Album” instead of the proper information, right-click the file and select “Info” to enter that information yourself.
