Steps
- Go online and find a search engine. For example, "Ask Jeeves.UK.", "Ask.com", "Yahoo", "Google", "Dogpile", "Banana Slug", etc.
- Type in "Writing Prompts."
- Choose "Writer's Digest." There you will find a huge list of ideas to inspire you, both fiction and non-fiction.
- Pick a non-fiction topic that you feel you could write about in an interesting and original way or, alternatively:
- Choose a fiction topic which reminds you of a problem you once encountered and how you solved it. Write about the problem and explain clearly how someone else in the same situation could resolve it.
- Read a book, game, music, or film review. What did you like or dislike about the review? Re-write it in your own words.
- Write an article on the difficulties you faced when writing your review and how you resolved them.
- Think of something that has happened to you recently. Write it down in the form of a news report.
- Write about your writers block or write a story about someone with writer's block.
Tips
- Check for spelling and grammatical errors. Your writing should be free of mistakes.
- When you have finished, put it aside for at least 24 hours and then read it again. It is surprising how many errors you can pick up on a second reading.
- Create a rough draft first.
- Do not try to edit as you go along, wait until you have completed your draft, then edit.
- Just write and write until you have exhausted your idea.
- If you get stuck along the way, just take a moment to sit back, relax, and remember what you are truly writing about. You may just need a moment to recall the reason why you are writing.

- If you use someone you know as the inspiration for your news report, remember that this is only an exercise. It is not to be published without their express consent.
