Get a Discount from Comcast

If you are currently a Comcast customer, or are considering becoming a Comcast customer, there are numerous ways you can receive a discount on your services or total bill amount. If you are an existing Comcast customer, you may have more leverage in regards to negotiating discounts. Continue reading this guide to learn about the ways you can receive a discount on your Comcast services.

Steps

Researching Discounts for New Customers

  1. Determine the types of Comcast services you plan on using. Comcast currently offers a variety of services; including cable television, internet, home telephone service, a home security system, and technical support for computers.
    • Often, it is cheaper to have services packaged in "bundles." If you want more than one of the services listed above, there are a number of packages available. Keep in mind, though, that nearly all of the available packages include internet and cable together; there may not be special offers advertised for just home telephone and cable.[1]
    • Examine these deals closely. Some have noted that those that offer some of the best monthly rates also require the longest contracts. If you do not want to be tied down that long, or want to be able to pit competitors against each other again in the near future, a 24 month contract may not be the best plan.[2]
  2. Research the rates of the services offered by Comcast's competitors. This will allow you to determine the best deals being offered for these services, which you will mention to Comcast when you consult them regarding the discount.
  3. Ask sales representative about promotions and special offers. New Comcast customers are often eligible for rates and discounts that may not be available to existing customers.
    • If the sales representative does not offer you any noteworthy discount, mention the discount offered to you by competitors. In most cases, Comcast will match the discount to acquire you as a customer.
    • Beware of the fine print. Comcast will often provide offers that match or exceed those of their competitors for only a brief window at the beginning of the contract. If you are paying a "promotional rate" for the first six months, but must sign a two year contract at a higher rate, you may still be paying more to sign with Comcast. They also unilaterally change some rates without warning, so short contracts may always be the best option.[3]

Existing Comcast Customers

  1. Call Comcast and mention the discounts of competitors to their representative. In some cases, Comcast will work with you to save money on your existing services by offering you the discount.
    • If Comcast is not initially willing to provide you with a discount, mention the amount of time you have had Comcast as your provider. If you have been with Comcast for over 1 year, Comcast may view you as a loyal customer and provide you with the discount.
    • If you have always paid your Comcast bills on time, mention this factor to Comcast; as this may also demonstrate your loyalty to their company.
  2. Inform Comcast that you are considering cancelling your service. This strategy can be used if Comcast is not willing to work with you regarding a discount; especially if the same discount is being offered by their competitors. You may then be transferred to a Comcast retention specialist, who will most likely offer you additional discounts or promotions to keep your business.
    • This is another important moment in which you can bring up the cost or advantages of a competing company's plans. Explain to what extent the convenience of using the other company's services makes their offer more attractive. Try to make this point early in the conversation, as this will force them to begin providing counter offers from the very beginning.
  3. Receive confirmation of any changes to your contract. Make sure to receive a confirmation number--either as stated by the customer service agent or sent to your email--before you hang up. Comcast agents do not have the best track record of customer service, and there are many noted instances in which the promises given over the phone have not fit with the bills that customers receiver later.[4]
    • Like most service providers, Comcast has a customer retention department that deals specifically with customers who threaten to cut their service or switch to a competitor. These agents are trained to be somewhat difficult to work with, but they also have the right to provide certain offers that are not widely available otherwise.[5] If you can be extremely patient with them, you can get a deal.

Alternate Discount Methods

  1. Ask Comcast about discounts that could be specific to your circumstances. The regional offices do run different deals for seniors or military personnel at certain times of the year.
    • Some regions or states may partner with Comcast to provide you with a discount if you meet certain eligibility criteria.
  2. Search the Internet for Comcast coupon codes. If you are purchasing services from Comcast on their website, you can enter coupon codes at the time of checkout to receive various discounts.
    • Perform an Internet search using keywords such as "Comcast coupon codes" to locate websites with valid coupon codes. You can also visit the "Retail Me Not" website featured in the Sources section of this article to review a list of Comcast coupon codes that provide various discounts.
    • Beware some of these "coupon" sites. Many are really just advertisements for companies, and the "special" offers are no different than those available directly through the company.
  3. Search for seasonal discounts. In particular, look for things such as back-to-school deals, holiday promotions, and anything tied to an event throughout the year. August is moving season for many people, and so that is another great time to look for deals that Comcast is running for the higher than average number of people moving during that time. They have typically run summer deals on one portion of the company website.[6]
