Go Home in Time

Do you often find yourself going home 10, 15, even 30 minutes after the 5 o'clock whistle? Do you wonder where the time goes? Or do you feel guilty for leaving quickly right when you're supposed to?

Steps

  1. Arrive at work on time. Be ready to start work when you're supposed to, and you won't have to make up for it at the end of the day.
  2. Prioritize your workload - urgent and unpleasant jobs should be done first. Putting them off causes delays to you and everyone else later in the day. When you get the difficult work done earlier in the day, your schedule will clear up faster come closing time.
  3. Do your fair share of the work. Don't just do the nice jobs.
  4. Don't be afraid to tell your supervisor or manager if you need help with a large workload. They can delegate some of the work. If you are working diligently and still not getting done in time, your superiors are more likely to help you.
  5. Work through your lunch hour if you have a deadline to meet. Avoid taking frequent coffee breaks or chit chatting with your co workers during lunch time. This consumes a lot of time.
  6. Prove yourself to be a good worker and going home on time should not be an issue.
  7. Be prepared to stay behind late sometimes if your employer asks you to. Being flexible today will stand you in good stead tomorrow.

Tips

  • If you are expected to work late regularly, you should renegotiate your salary or ask to be allowed to go home at the time specified in your contract.
  • You have every right to go home on time unless the employer has a good reason to ask you to stay on.
  • Going home on time is not the same thing as going home early.
  • Your employer should give you at least 24 hours' notice if he/she wants you to work late.

Warnings

  • Don't sneak out early, or you will be found out and you will alienate your workmates.
