Have a Good Self Image

Having a good self image can make you more confident and happy. If you have low self esteem or are depressed, you might want to try building self esteem with the following steps.

Steps

  1. Stop criticizing yourself. If something about you seems wrong, don't focus on it, or say that without it you wouldn't be perfect. Focus on your better traits.
  2. When you look in the mirror, smile. Smiling will make you feel good, but frowning at yourself will make you feel sad.
  3. Every night before you go to bed list ten things you like about yourself. This can be anything, about appearance or personality or anything else.
  4. Get lots of sleep. When you have a lot of sleep, you are more happy and positive.
  5. Wear flattering clothes. If you know you look good on the outside, you'll feel better on the inside.
  6. Make your hair look nice and wear makeup, but only if you want to. Feel free to cut and dye your hair. Some people say this is covering up your true self, but it isn't. Remember not to care what they say. It is important to look the way you want to because, again, knowing you are what you want to be on the outside will make you happier on the inside.
  7. Do things that interest you. If you like writing, write. If you like dancing, dance. If you like studying astronomy, study astronomy. Doing what makes you happy will make you feel more confident in your abilities.
  8. Be yourself. This will make you very happy and feel good about yourself. Be around people who accept you for who you are, and don't expect you to change. These people are your real friends.
  9. Write down all your traits, good and bad. Then cross out the list of traits you want to get rid of, and write down a list of traits you want. Work on getting/getting rid of these traits.
  10. Do something that will make you proud of yourself. Go out of your comfort zone. Do something brave. But don't do anything reckless.
  11. Just let loose and have fun! Maybe you are under a lot of stress. Forget about it, just for a little while. This will make you happier.

Tips

  • Remember that imperfection is perfection.
  • Try to find the reason you might not have a good self image. For example, if a friend is always putting you down, stand up for yourself. You are not ugly, you are not stupid.
  • Be yourself.
  • Don't use makeup to hide your features.

Warnings

  • If you always seem to have a bad self image, you may be depressed or have a mood disorder.
  • People might make fun of you for being who you are, but don't listen to them. They are probably just jealous.
  • You can't change things like ethnicity and sexuality, so you will just have to learn to accept certain things. Don't lie about who you are or get plastic surgery.
  • Remember there is a fine line between confidence and recklessness.
