Hide

Are you playing hide-and-seek, or do you want to hide from people who annoy you? Or do you just want to do it for the fun of it? Whether or not you're doing this for any of the reasons given, this article article will show you how.

Steps

  1. Make sure you are not being observed or break line of sight.
  2. Step behind your cover or into the shadows. (If possible do it silently).
  3. Keep quiet! This is the key.
  4. If it's possible get up high or crouch. The human mind instinctively looks left, right, and back -- but not up or down. Make sure you're not at eye-level.
  5. Try to compress your body as much as possible. This will make whoever sees you less likely to associate a small shape with a human body in their brain.
  6. Stay still (especially at night). The human eye detects motion before anything else, even more so at night.
  7. If possible, cover yourself with your surroundings (leaves in a forest, clothes in a laundry room).
  8. When hiding, it's worth noting that people are very quick to detect movement. There's a much higher chance of staying hidden if you don't move. Even if they seem to be looking right at you they may not have seen you, so don't even move your eyes if they are looking in your direction.
  9. If you aren't hidden by the time they are looking, dart to the nearest place, even if it's obvious. (e.g. if you are wearing all black clothes in a bedroom, it may still work to get on a bed with pillows, get behind all the pillows, and then curl up to disguise yourself as a pillow.)
  10. If you're small enough go and hide in small places. The person (or people) you're hiding from would not think to look in such a small area.
  11. Draw a map of your area the day before you hide and circle some good hiding spots. Use the steps detailed above.
  12. Here are some ideas of hiding places:
    • You can hide in your closet behind some old bags of clothes, or even in a big box.
    • Hide in the basement! Or the garage! You can even hide in the car, but be careful that you don't mess around with the car and accidentally start the engine and make sure you don't lock yourself inside. Open the window just a little bit for air circulation but not enough to be noticable.
    • Hide behind a sofa. If there are some curtains behind a sofa, hide behind them too, for double protection. If people look behind the sofa all they will see is the curtains (which you are hiding behind.)
    • Hide under a large pile of pillows!

Tips

  • If people say "I see you!" don't come out of hiding, because they may not have actually seen you and are only trying to trick you into coming out.
  • If possible, WALK, don't run, to your hiding place. Running will make you out of breath, and the loudness of your breathing, as well as your chest moving, will give you away.
  • If possible, don't hide with other people.
  • Once everybody's been found but you, if possible move somewhere else so that your good hiding spot is still a secret, and you can use it next round.
  • Wear dark blue instead of black. Black will make you stand out like a shadow rather than blend in.
  • Be creative. Think of great hiding places where people would never think to look.
  • Don't squeal and make sounds to be funny. This just angers the people you hide with.
  • "If you can't see them they can't see you" is a good rule of thumb, but it has exceptions.
  • If you desperately need to cough or sneeze then quickly run to the side of the room farthest away from the person/people(if the person trying to find you isn't in the room, otherwise this is pointless) or even better into a different room (be sure that the person trying to find you isn't in there) cough, sneeze or otherwise make a sound and then go back to your spot. Use a small pillow or cushion to muffle the sound if that seems like a good choice or the person is in the room and you cannot afford to move to somewhere else.
  • If hiding in a small room, make sure to blend in or hide under a desk where they won't find you.
  • When hiding, be sure you will feel comfortable with the hiding spot, because if you an uncomfortable spot, that will cause you to shift your body. That will allow the finder/seeker to easily see your shadow/you and will eventually find you.
  • If you have time to prepare in advance, always wear clothing which breaks up your silhouette. If the searcher doesn't look quite hard enough, they will not notice you as you will not seem "human-shaped."
  • Try not to make noise while walking or running. The seeker might hear you!
  • Remember to hide somewhere comfortable, because if you're in a tight, uncomfortable spot, you might need to move or shift a bit, and even a slight movement might cause someone to spot you.

Warnings

  • NEVER hide in a laundry machine, clothes dryer, or car trunk. If you decide to go ahead and do this anyway, never, ever close the door after you. They cannot be opened from the inside and often lead to suffocation, and if someone turns on the laundry machine or dryer, you could be severely injured.
  • If you are caught, you could get in trouble, depending where you hide.
  • If you have blonde hair, it will be easy to see in a lot of environments; wear a hat. On the other hand, black hair tends to seem unusually shiny, especially when there is a small amount of light available (for eg. dim moonlight).

Things You'll Need

  • Darkness or Cover
  • Camouflage (optional)
