Hop on a Unicycle

Okay so you've learned how to unicycle and are cruising around the streets. What now, you may ask? How about learning to hop up stairs!

Steps

  1. Learn how to mount and ride a unicycle.
  2. After you can unicycle and feel comfortable, you can start to learn how to hop and eventually hop up stairs.
  3. While you are unicycling slow down and almost come to a stop (this should be done on flat ground away from any obstacles). When you are stopped your strong foot should be in the front with your weak foot in the back.
  4. Reach down and grab under the seat with your dominant hand.
  5. Now bend your knees (most of your jump power will come from your ankles)
  6. As you straighten your knees push up with your ankles and pull up on the underside of the unicycle with your hand.
  7. When you land you can either continue to hop or start to pedal.
  8. Practise until you are comfortable hopping on flat ground.
  9. When you are comfortable on flat ground, find a place where one section of the ground is higher than the rest or use a short platform.
  10. Start to hop beside the ledge and, when you are ready hop, lean towards the ledge. Make sure that you hopping high enough to clear the ledge.
  11. If done correctly you will now be on top of the ledge.



Tips

  • To hop a certain direction lean your body that direction while hopping.
  • Buy some shin guards and wear them. If you miss one of the pedals it may come up and hit your shin.
  • Always wear protective clothing and gear.
  • Make sure you can hop high enough to clear the step.
  • Be comfortable unicycling back-and-forth before trying this.
  • Now that you can hop you can learn a bunch of freestyling tricks!
  • Unicycle with a friend.
