Insert a Tampon when You're Nervous
If you've read How to Use a Tampon and you're still having trouble because you're nervous, try these steps.
Steps
- Use a tampon with a plastic applicator. The plastic will slide in more easily. Unwrap the first tampon and try to get an idea of how it works. You will use the smaller tube on the bottom to push the tampon into your body. You insert the upper tube into your body and then remove after you've put the tampon in. The soft part is actually the tampon. This will remain in your body until you pull the string to remove it.
- Take off your pants/skirt and your panties. Get a comfortable position. For some women this is just simply sitting on the toilet. For others it's squatting. For some it's lying on the floor with their legs spread apart, like you would for a vaginal exam. For most, though, it's standing with one foot on the toilet. No way is better than the other. Whatever is most comfortable for you is best. It's important, however, that if you're nervous, you must be able to take your time and not worry about being disturbed.
- Relax your muscles down there. Take a few deep breaths and try not to be tense if you are. The tampon will feel uncomfortable if you insert it with tensed muscles and it will probably be harder to get in as well.
- Insert your pointer finger into your vagina first. This is to help understand the direction your vagina goes in, so you know how to push the tampon. Your vagina is like a tube that points to the small of your back; it doesn't point straight up to your head. If you try to push a tampon up instead of following the natural direction of your vagina, it will be uncomfortable.
- Use lubrication. Purchase a lubricant specifically designed for genital use. Don't use petroleum jelly, lotion, or anything not intended for this kind of thing. The lube will help make everything go more smoothly, so that you're more comfortable and less nervous.
