Install a Car Stereo Head Unit

Does your old head unit (stereo) have a cassette player only? Do you want to replace it? Well, read this to learn how to install!

Steps

  1. DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE TERMINAL ON YOUR BATTERY!
    • For an old stock stereo, you may have to remove the dash or certain parts of it to access the stereo. Do that by locating screws and bolts and taking them off. Make sure to keep them in a safe place.
    • Insert DIN tools into each slot on the stereo behind the faceplate for an aftermarket stereo,. Slide the whole stereo out.
  2. Disconnect the antenna wiring (The wire with the big metal tip)and the stereo head unit wiring (wire harness).
  3. Reconnect the antenna into your new stereo.
  4. Use butt connectors and wire crimps to connect the stock wire harness with a car specific one that is sold separately. The color of the wires on each harness should match up, if not do connect only the matching ones...
    • these are the color codes of the wires:
    • +Red..............12v ignition
    • +Yellow...........12v battery
    • -Black............Ground
    • +Blue.............Power antenna
    • +Blue/white.......Remote turn on
    • Orange...........Dashlight/dimmer
    • Orange/white.....Dashlight/dimmer
    • Orange/black.....Dashlight/dimmer
    • +White............Front left positive
    • -White/black......Front left negative
    • +Grey.............Front right positive
    • -Grey/black.......Front right negative
    • +Green............Rear left positive
    • -Green/black......Rear left negative
    • +Purple...........Rear right positive
    • -Purple/black.....Rear right negative
  5. Reconnect the negative terminal on your battery and see if it works.
  6. Slide the stereo back into the dash and remount the dash that you removed, including screws and bolts.

Tips

  • Disconnect the car's battery before doing any electrical work.
  • Make sure to keep the old stereo's code. (CarStereo.com only charges $2.95 for redeeming the car stereo code.) You'll have to re-enter it later into your new car stereo.

Warnings

  • Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery before working on anything electrical in your car
  • Use all tools as intended
