Join the U.S. Army Special Forces
U.S. Army Special Forces is an elite unit whose primary mission is to train and advise foreign military leaders and troops. They are also experts in unconventional warfare reconnaissance, close quarters combat, and a wide variety of other special operations. If you would like to join the "quiet professionals," you're on your way!
Steps
- Join the Army. Perform well and stay out of trouble as adverse actions on your record can exclude you from consideration. You must be a United States citizen.
- Make sure that you have a GT(general technical) score of 110 or higher on the ASVAB.and be a Specialist or above, be airborne qualified or agree to volunteer for airborne training.
- Understand that you must be able to pass the standard Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT), as well as be able to pass a very thorough physical examination. Make sure you are in the very best physical condition, or you'll just wash out of training. You must also be able to qualify for an Interim Secret Clearance.
- Be ready to pass the Defense Language Aptitude Battery or Defense Language Proficiency Test. Take a few language courses in high school or college. Talk to a Special Forces recruiter or enlist with a Special Forces contract.
Tips
- Selection is the hardest part. This is where the weaker candidates are weeded out and even if you make it to the end there is still no guarantee that you will be selected and progress to the "Q" Course where your actual training begins.
- During S.F.A.S. you will be assessed on a variety of different tasks and you will not be informed about what the standards of completion are, so give 100% effort at all times. It is recommended that you be in excellent physical condition as none of these tasks are easy! It is also highly recommended that you become very proficient at land navigation as this skill is crucial.
- Females: please be aware that one of the requirements to join any of the various Special Forces units in the US is that you are male. This is not sexism, it is a law. Apologies to anyone who is offended.
- Practice walking for long distances (20mi.) with a weighted (70lbs.) rucksack.
- Special Forces training is broken down into two major parts: S.F.A.S. (Special Forces Assessment and Selection or simply "Selection") and the "Q" (Qualification) Course.
- Consistency is key. You must consistently show that you are better than your peers.
