Keep Warm After Showering in Winter

Do you dread the end of your hot shower because you know you will be freezing once you open the door/curtain? Don't worry because here are some helpful steps for you to follow so you can enjoy your showers on cold days.

Steps

Steam and towels

  1. Make sure the hot water is on. You don't want to step into a shower which jets icy water all over you.
  2. Take both hair towel and body towel into your bathroom and hang them over the door of the shower cubicle or curtain rail. If you leave them outside the shower, you will have to open the door to access them and the cold air from outside the shower will freeze you!
  3. Have your shower and wash your hair. While you may enjoy hot water more, it dries out your skin.
  4. There will be lots of steam when you are finished. This will keep you warm. Inhale the steam. This will keep you warm. Take your hair towel down from the rail and squeeze the water from your hair. Drape the towel over your head. This will keep any heat which could escape from your head, trapped close to your body still.
  5. Wrap yourself in your towel before stepping out of the shower.

Gradual cooling

  1. Take a nice warm shower as you usually would.
  2. Leave warm towels outside of the shower.
  3. A few minutes before you get out, slowly turn the water down, so it's cooler.
  4. After you get down that the water is cool/tepid, but not hot or cold, getting out and stepping into the cold will be much less of a shock.

Water as hot as you can stand it

  1. Near the end of your shower turn the water up so that it is really hot, be careful not to burn yourself, but make it hot enough so that you want it to be cold. The heat will remain with you long enough to quickly towel dry and get into your clothes or PJs.

Ice in a cup

  1. Before your shower, bring a half-full cup of ice.
  2. Start sucking on a few cubes of ice a few minutes before your shower is over. This will make your "insides" feel cooler, so your brain is tricked into thinking that by comparison to the outside environment, you're warmer than you actually are.

Door ajar

  1. Right before getting out of the shower, open the shower door. You will feel a slight chill, but once you get out of the shower, you'll barely feel the cold. Another way to do this is to leave the door slightly ajar during the whole shower––this will even the temperature for you both in and out of the shower.
    • This method may steam up the bathroom quickly if you don't have a good ventilation system.

Tips

  • Make sure you are dry before you're out of the shower. Otherwise the water on your skin will evaporate, taking your body heat away with it.
  • Add a heater in a safe manner and have the door closed to keep the bathroom like a sauna.
  • Your towels should be hot and dry before use. Try putting them in the dryer right before you shower, though be aware that this is environmentally unfriendly because dryers are extremely high in electricity usage.
  • Try putting your clothes on in a warm steamy bathroom.
  • Drape your clothes over a radiator for a few minutes to heat them. Be sure to keep an eye on them, or they may burn.
  • Try plugging the drain while you shower. This keeps your feet warm, at least. Flip the drain open when you turn the water off, and you will have plenty of time to dry off with warm feet.
  • Seal the shower curtain to the walls and bottom to stop cold air from leaking into the shower.
  • Spray down the inside of the shower curtain with a hand held shower nozzle using very warm or hot water. Then it won't be cold if you brush up against it.
  • Avoid keeping the water really hot the whole time, turn it down near the end.
  • As an alternative that may not work for everyone, look up a wikiHow article describing how to adapt yourself to the cold. It may be a problem that fixes itself! Have a little courage!
  • Try to get it over with as quickly as possible. Take a ten minute timer and use it when you shower. Don't hesitate just get out start drying yourself as quickly as possible then you can put a warm onesie on and chill!
  • Bring your clothes with you in the shower and put them on right after your shower so you won't get cold when getting out.
  • Towel yourself of IN the shower. Remember to pat down your body with the towel, and also dry your hair. No one likes wet hair when it is cold outside!
  • If you're feeling brave have a cold shower as well as being hugely beneficial to the body, you will want to get out and the air will seem warmer!!
  • Try putting on a nice, fluffy bathrobe after showering.
  • Have the heating on while in the shower and put you towel and/or clothes on it while you shower. Then when you get out, you can carry on being warm!
  • Try putting an ice cube in your mouth. This will help lessen the shock of the colder air.
  • Take a bath and don't get your hair wet so it's warm when you go to bed.
