Know What to Pack for a Cruise

Going for a cruise with your family or friends? Then follow this to know what to pack! This includes instructions and a sample packing list.

Steps

  1. Write, type, or think in your mind a list of items that you'd mostly need.
    • Add some items to the list as you think of or decide on other needs and priorities.
    • Eliminate things that you decide that you probably won't need.
  2. Check off things as you have them packed. Be sure that if you get them back out that you make a notation of that change so you can be sure you put it back. Then, mark it off again.
  3. Make a special mark for things that are ready to pack, but that you know that you will need before you depart. This will help ensure that you do not forget your toothbrush, hairbrush, etc.
    • Lay out everything that you need to keep out until the last minute. Pack them in a convenient place so that they can be easily accessed if you decide you need them again.
  4. Make a list of things that are 100% essential. This may include your boarding tickets, passport, wallet and credit card, prescriptions, antihistamine, motion-sickness pills, deodorant, hair/tooth care and shaving needs, clothes/underwear, socks/hose and shoes, phone, and digital camera.
    • Documents that would be normally included in the bag would be airline tickets, three copies of airline tickets and cruise tickets, cruise documents, emergency numbers at home, a wallet, driver's license, medical insurance card, picture ID, and cash or traveler's checks.
    • Electronics and other items you can bring along are watches (presumably one that is water-proof or at least splash-resistant), glasses, sunglasses, goggles, power strips or adapters, converter, phone, video camera, binoculars, waterproof camera, digital camera, extra batteries, music player, travel alarm clock, miniature flashlight, umbrella, prescriptions or medicines, dramamine, bandages, anti-diarrheal medications, Aspirin, Tylenol, Advil, bug spray, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, lotion, highlighter (you can use on to highlight things you want to do on a cruise agenda), shoes, swimsuit, underwear, socks, second layer clothing (for winter cruises), shirts, sandals or flip-flops, tennis shoes, shorts, bras, blouses, purses, blow drier, comb, hair gel, hair spray, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, towel, and razor.
  5. Make a shopping list of things that you do not have. Be sure to double check it before you go to the store to avoid having to make multiple trips.
  6. Go to the store and buy the things on your shopping list, unless you are sure you don't need them. You also need to double-check you have everything. Return to home with all your items.
  7. Put your items in the bag and you are done! You must check there is a passport, along with vaccination certificates if you have a travel shot.

Tips

  • If your cruise is short, then you can take off some things on your cruise list.
  • You don't need to pack books if you get seasick. However, you can pack tapes of books and always bring maps for other people to read.
  • Bring a water bottle, it will save a lot of money rather than spending it at a shop on the cruise.
  • You might buy some of the things that you find out that you need rather than taking unnecessary items along.

Warnings

  • If you don't bring your passport/vaccination certificate, they may not allow you on the ship.
  • Some of these things may only be needed for staying someplace for a long time, or for unusual events--so don't make packing and unpacking an ordeal.
  • Don't bring too much because some cruise ships don't have enough storage for your luggage, or it may be too heavy.
  • Don't bring canned items on a Carnival cruise because they are restricted. Bottles are allowed, however.
