Know Your Used Car's History

If you're buying a used car, you don't want to risk paying thousands of dollars for one that has hidden problems. That's why it's important to do your homework and research before purchasing your used vehicle. It's worth paying for a car history report because it renders information about the car's history related to accidents such as being totaled or salvaged, flood damage and how it has been used previously in years.

Steps

  1. Researching the car's history. This is one the first steps you should do in the process of purchasing a used car. Checking a used car's history can answer many basic who, what, when, where and how questions any buyer might be curious about.
    • All you need to get a history report is the vehicle identification number(VIN) of the car you're planning on buying. Most VIN numbers are found in the vehicle title or under the cars windshield.
    • VIN numbers hold registration records that describe how the car was used in the past. A vehicle history report can show you if the vehicle was rebuilt or if the car was salvaged. History reports are powerful tools that could help you greatly to minimize that risk.
  2. Realize that not all car accidents are reported. Just because a car's history report does not show any accidents or anything bad happening to the car it does not mean the car is perfect.
    • Many experts recommend to have the vehicle inspected by a mechanic before the purchase is completed. One of the worst things that can happen to you is discovering that you have thrown away thousands of dollars on a used car that gives you nothing but trouble.
