Level Up in Prayer in RuneScape

Prayer is one of the easiest yet most expensive skills to train in RuneScape. The most popular method, burying bones, is slow and repetitive. Fortunately, in particular for members, there are more ways to train prayer.

Things You'll Need

  • Completion of the Ghosts Ahoy quest (gives you an ectophial so you can teleport to the ectofuntus easily)
  • Activated Burthorpe lodestone (gnome bank is close to lodestone)
  • 58 Agility (optional, gives ability to take a shortcut to the slime pool for quick access to ectoplasm)
  • Empty buckets (to hold ectoplasm) - at least 27
  • Empty pots (to hold bonemeal, if using bones) - at least 13
  • Bones (from monster drops or purchased from Grand Exchange)

Steps

Bones

  1. Kill monsters and NPCs. Most NPCs leave bones as a drop. You should make a habit of picking them up and burying them to gain prayer experience.
    • Alternatively, if you have enough money, purchase them from the Grand Exchange in Varrock. The best bones for free-to-play players are big bones (15 xp). For members, dragon bones will yield more experience (72 xp).
  2. Bank your bones and withdraw full inventories at a time.
  3. Click on all the bones to bury them. Withdraw more and repeat.

Using the Ectofuntus (for members)

The Ectofuntus is one of the most popular ways to train prayer among members because of its XP multiplier (4x).

  1. Kill dragons to obtain dragon bones, or buy them from the Grand Exchange. This is if you want the 4x XP multiplier. You can also buy demonic ashes (look for accursed ashes, impious ashes, or infernal ashes). You may have to offer above market price to obtain these quickly.
  2. Withdraw 13 bones and 13 pots to your inventory (if using bones, if using ashes you may skip step 4-5).
  3. Teleport to the ectofuntus by emptying the ectophial onto the ground. It will refill automatically when you arrive.
  4. Go up the stairs and click on the bone grinder to add your bones into the hopper. If prompted, choose automatic mode. It's much easier and faster than manual mode. It will fill all your pots with bonemeal.
  5. Teleport to Burthorpe and bank your bonemeal. Withdraw more bones and teleport back to the ectofuntus. Repeat this process until you have used up all your bones.
  6. Withdraw 27 empty buckets and teleport to the ectofuntus once more using your ectophial.
  7. Open the trapdoor at the ectofuntus. This leads to a room containing the ectopool. You have to go down several flights of stairs to get access to it, unless you have 58 agility in which case you can use the shortcut ("Jump down weathered wall") located near the ladder.
  8. Teleport to Burthorpe and bank your filled buckets of ectoplasm. Withdraw 27 more and repeat until you use up all your buckets.
  9. Withdraw 13 bonemeal pots (or 13 accursed ashes) and 13 buckets of ectoplasm.
  10. Teleport to the ectofuntus using your ectophial.
  11. Worship the ectofuntus by clicking on it. You can click as fast as you want. Click until you use up all your bonemeal and ectoplasm. Then, teleport away and fill up with more bonemeal and ectoplasm.

Altar at POH (Player-owned House)

  1. Stockpile bones in your bank.
  2. Build an altar in your house's chapel. This will require a Construction level of 75 to even have the room available. If you don't have this, you can use another player's altar.
  3. Use bones on the altar. At high construction levels (level 75+) you get up to 3.5 times the amount of experience per set of bones. This is not as much as worshipping the Ectofuntus, but it is a lot faster and thus the best way if you have a high construction level.
  4. Alternatively, visit another player's house. The house needs to be open for you to access their altar. The official world for open gilded altars is World 31 at Yanille. When you enter the portal, just enter the name of the hosting player (will usually be in brackets in the advertiser's text)

Tips

  • Using searing ashes gives the best XP but it is also very expensive for this reason.
  • You can use the bank in Port Phasmatys if you have completed the Ghosts Ahoy quest and are wearing an amulet of ghostspeak (you can obtain one from Father Urhney in Lumbridge swamp). You can enter Port Phasmatys using ecto-tokens if you haven't completed Ghosts Ahoy, but this is not recommended as it's much slower than just teleporting to a location closer to a bank.
  • Using ashes won't give you as much experience as grinding bonemeal. However, grinding bonemeal is time consuming. Use whatever option is best for you.
  • The player owned house altar method is the best way to train once a high level in Construction is attained (level 75). This is because the Ectofuntus, although granting more experience, is a lot slower.
  • After every 511 worships of the Ectofuntus, you have to collect your ectotokens from one of the disciples. Currently, ectotokens have very limited usage and so most players just drop them (after completing Ghosts Ahoy - you will need some tokens in order to complete the quest)
  • Pots and buckets can be obtained from most general stores in RuneScape
  • Only members are capable of worshipping the Ectofuntus or using a gilded altar

Warnings

  • Beware of accidentally burying expensive bones, such as dragon bones. You will get more experience if you use them to make bonemeal. To avoid this problem, always use automatic mode at the grinder.
