Light the Advent Candles

Well, it is that time of year again. The time when we prepare all ourselves for Christmas that is. We make preparations for that Holy Day for approximately 30 days in advance, and we mark each week with an Advent wreath.

Steps

  1. Get yourself a regular Christmas wreath.
  2. Place the wreath upon your dinner table or the place of your choice.
  3. Place four candles within the four corners of the wreath. Three of the candles should be purple, blue, or red. The fourth one must be pink.
  4. On the first Sunday of Advent, light the first candle. Sing either 'O Come Divine Messiah,' 'O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,' or another Advent hymn or read out loud from your Bible.
  5. On the second Sunday of Advent, light the second candle, as well as the first one. Again, sing an Advent hymn or read from your Bible.
  6. On the third Sunday of Advent, light the pink candle, as well as the first two candles. Sing an Advent hymn or read from your Bible.
  7. On the fourth Sunday of Advent, light all four Advent candles, and sing an Advent hymn or read from your Bible.
  8. Finished.

Tips

  • Try having a white candle in the middle to light on Christmas eve or day to represent the "Christ candle".
  • Many Protestant churches use four red candles instead of three red and one pink to keep with the theme of Christmas.
  • The pink candle symbolizes joyful anticipation of the Coming of the Messiah.
  • Light the pink candle on the Third Sunday of Advent.
  • 3 of the candles should be purple, blue, or red. The fourth one must be pink.
  • Purple candles are traditional of Catholic churches. A lot of Protestant churches have begun to use red or blue candles to separate Advent from other holidays.
  • A wreath is not required! The candles can be in a straight line.

Warnings

  • Be careful that you do not cause a fire hazard.
  • Make sure the wreath is on a stable surface.
