Live Without a Computer

Though computers make our lives easier and more interesting, sometimes we feel too dependent on them. There are many reasons for living without them, such as independence and practicing a simple living.

Steps

  1. Write down:
    • Things you use the Internet for,
    • Things you search most often,
    • Phone numbers of people you talk to most often,
    • Times of news on your favourite radio station,
    • Ten songs you listen to most often,
    • Your favourite video game genre.
  2. Change your job. Of course, some jobs (programmer, for instance) cannot be performed without a computer.
  3. Text your friends instead of using social networks. Ask your friends for their phone numbers and call them and text them instead of e-mailing and writing Facebook messages.
  4. Listen to the radio. Find a good radio station and listen to the news every day. If you have problems listening to it at one time consistently, buy a radio alarm clock.
  5. Build your library. Buy some good encyclopedia (for instance Britannica) and all reference books you need for your work or hobbies. Write down things you usually search for and try to find analogous books.
  6. Buy a hardback notebook. Keep all your notes and private writings in one place.
  7. Practice readable handwriting or Buy a Typewriter. Try to handwrite in a style similar to Times New Roman — it is not easy, but it is possible. Learn to write without needing a lot of corrections.
  8. Put all your favourite music on one CD. Honestly, most people listen to only about ten or twelve songs. Choose these ones you listen to most often.
  9. Learn to play your favourite game in real life. If your favourite game is Solitaire, learn to play Patience in real life. If your favourite game is Counter Strike, begin with paintball or action shooting. If your favourite game is WoW, begin with LARPs or Dungeons and Dragons. If you do not know how to convert your favourite PC game to reality, learn to juggle — it is said that jugglers never get bored.
  10. Go to the cinema on a regular basis. If you cannot go to the cinema, read books instead of watching films based on them.
  11. Try to find original ways to express your opinions. Many people use the Internet as a medium for their expression. Instead of voracious self-expressing, so typical for communities and blogs, try to systematize your opinions and express them in an original and funny way. Write a novel, wear T-shirts with slogans or, better yet, live according to your opinions and give an example to others.
  12. Talk to real people instead of chatting. Develop your conversation skills and learn to talk to real people.
  13. Be creative. If you do not know how to convert your other Internet activities to non-Internet ones, imagine what people did one hundred years ago instead of your computer/Internet-related activity.
