Look Elegant Despite Poverty

To quote Coco Chanel, "Fashion fades, only style remains the same." Elegance is a state of mind. It's about simplicity, grace and poise.

Steps

  1. Do a little research. Know what you're looking for before you shop.
  2. Choose quality over quantity. Plan on no more than one new outfit per month. Take time to coordinate with your existing wardrobe.
  3. Find your color. Choose two or three basic colors that accentuate your skin, eyes or hair.
  4. Wear the classics. Choose simple, flattering lines with minimal accentuation. Stay with a small, subtle print.
  5. Be sure of the fit. Clothes should glide over your body. A larger size may be more appropriate. Be modest. Leave something to the imagination.
  6. Be monochromatic. One color is slimming and chic.
    • Wear a cream-colored sweater and pair of pants.
    • Wear a red jacket and skirt with a red print blouse.
    • Wear a yellow top with a yellow print skirt.
    • Try lavender, teal or maroon.
    • Wear navy pants with a dark blue shirt and tie.
    • Wear a brown suit with a brown shirt and tie.
    • Wear all black for evening events. Try a sleeveless dress with patterned stockings.
  7. Choose shoes carefully. A slight heel works well with pants or a skirt. Black is the easiest color to match with any outfit.
  8. Accessorize. Add a single piece of jewelry, such as a necklace or earrings, but not both. Use a small purse for the essentials. Wear cuff links or a watch, but not both.

Tips

  • Maintain a clean, neat appearance. Keep fit and eat healthy.
  • Rayon and cotton resist wrinkles and are easy to clean.
  • Fashion repeats itself. Visit the thrift stores.
  • Elegance is more about personality than it is about clothing and accessories Audrey Hepburn -- the epitome of elegance -- looked just as elegant in a pair of capris as she did in the "little black dress" from "Breakfast at Tiffany's." That was because she carried herself with perfect posture (but, without looking rigid,) spoke clearly in a soft (yet strong) voice, and held her head up.
  • Dollar stores carry makeup and accessories.
