Look Emo when Your Parents Are Strict
Do you have really strict parents, but still wish to look emo? Read this guide and find out how!
Steps
- Talk to your parents. Ask them why you're not allowed to do what you want. Tell them you have feelings, and make the conversation emotional. Figure out why they don't want you to dress this way. LISTEN to them, and don't get defensive or raise your voice. This will not help your cause. Instead, explain to them why you like the style, and why you feel that it helps to express yourself. Show them some pictures of the style (preferably nothing too outlandish). Finally, try to compromise with them. You can wear some of the style if you keep up on your homework and refrain from dying your hair too much and don't get facial piercings, for example. If they don't like you wearing so much black, then find brighter colors to accentuate your basic black.
- Don't change your hair color. Instead, if your parents are cool with it, go for clip-in extensions, or maybe spray-in dye around Halloween. It can be washed out, but be careful--it'll get on everything.
- Do not get piercings without your parents' permission. If they refuse, get clip-ons or magnetic studs. Just make sure your parents are cool with you wearing them. If they don't want you wearing them to school, then DON'T! Doing so will only prove their point about the style, and they will only restrict you more.
- Cut your hair so that it has many short layers. This is a great style because you can spike it up if you want to, and leave it flat when you need to. Again, if you show them some pictures of the hair, both styled and down, they may be more open to it.
- Get an iPod and listen to emotive hardcore or heavier stuff, without annoying your parents. Examples:
- Indian Summer
- Toru Okada
- City of Caterpillar
- I Hate Myself
- Bring Me The Horizon
- Parkway Drive
- Slipknot
- Before Their Eyes
- Start wearing more skinny jeans, belts and scarves
Tips
- If your parents want to change you, simply explain why you changed to emo.
- Do not lie; if your parents ask you what's going on, tell them you've changed and explain to them what "emo" is..
- Punk is not emo.
- Slowly start wearing more black and then stop the star wearing make up with bright colors to bring out the black.
Warnings
- Do not try too hard; real emo's will call you a poser. This is a terrible insult.
- Don't get piercings without your parent's permission if they're strict. This will effectively destroy your social life by being grounded from basically everything.
- Some people will push you around because you are emo.
- Don't have too many arguments then go out and slam the door
- Do NOT start cutting yourself. Some people cut themselves because they think that "Oh since I'm dressing 'emo' I need to cut." Well don't; cutting can leave scars, and it can become addicting.
- Be careful on Myspace; bad things can happen to teenagers who get a little too comfortable. Use common sense.
