Make Almond Milk With a Juicer

Almond milk is a protein-rich beverage that is also a popular alternative to dairy or soy milks. Mass produced almond milk contains preservatives and up to 20 g (1.7 tbsp.) of sugar per cup. Homemade almond milk, made with a juicer or blender, is healthier because it contains more nutrients and less sugar. A juicer is preferable because common models, such as the Omega or Hurom, strain while they create the milk. This article will tell you how to make almond milk with a juicer.

Steps

  1. Place 1 cup (170 g) of plain, unsalted almonds in a large bowl. These are sometimes called "sweet almonds."
  2. Pour 3 cups (0.7 l) of cold water into the bowl.
  3. Allow the nuts to soak overnight, or for approximately 8 to 12 hours. The soaking process makes the almonds soft enough to juice. Trying to juice raw, unsoaked almonds can break a juicer.
  4. Pour out the water and rinse the almonds thoroughly. Make sure you rinse until the water runs clear.
  5. Pour 3 more cups (0.7 l) of water onto the bowl of soaked almonds. If you are making a bigger batch, use a 1 to 3 ratio of almonds to water.
  6. Set up your juicer. If you have blade attachments, insert one that is meant for small pieces of food. Make sure you have the juice and waste receptacles attached securely in order to reduce mess.
  7. Turn on the juicer.
  8. Spoon a ladle full of almonds and water into the top of the juicer. Pour it carefully into the top of the juicer.
  9. Continue ladling almonds and water into the juicer. Stop when the juice receptacle is full. The milk should be frothy.
    • If you do not have a juicer that extracts pulp, then strain the resulting almond milk through a cheesecloth. Place cheesecloth securely over a bowl or large jar and slowly pour the juice through the jar. Pulp will collect on the top of the cheesecloth.
  10. Flavor almond milk after it has been through the juicer. This is an optional step, as plain almond milk is slightly sweet. You may prefer it sweetened, if you are used to store-bought versions.
    • Sweeten the milk with honey, agave nectar, cane sugar or maple syrup to taste. Stir the sweetener in, starting with 1 tsp. (4.9 ml) and continuing until you get the right taste.
    • Add 1 tsp. (4.9 ml) of vanilla extract to create vanilla almond milk.
    • Add 1 tbsp. (6 g) of unsweetened cocoa powder to create chocolate almond milk.
  11. Fill glass canning jars to the brim with almond milk and cover them. Place them in the refrigerator as soon as possible. Fresh almond milk can be stored for 2 to 3 days.

Tips

  • Blend almond milk with bananas, dates, yogurt and/or fruit to create an almond milk shake or smoothie.
  • If you only want a slight, natural sweetness to your milk, soak 2 to 4 dates when you soak your almonds. Place them into the juicer with your almonds and water.
  • You can buy reusable nut milk bags online. They help you to strain the milk like you would with a cheesecloth.

Warnings

  • Do not place dry almonds in a blender. They are too hard to juice and may damage the blender.
