Make BMX Pegs

BMX street is a very common form of BMX riding where the rider uses many obstacles in their everyday environment to do wicked tricks. Grinding has become a major part in BMX as well as the weight of your bike, so to lighten up a bit, here are the steps on making your own super-light pegs.

Steps

  1. Know your riding style. If you do really heavy grinds, like constant grinding on every ledge you find, it's suggested that you buy steel or aluminum pegs rather than making your own. If you do grinds on a regular basis, than making these pegs will really benefit you weight wise. Also, the thickness of your pipe will also determine how sturdy and how long these home made pegs will last.
  2. Go to your local hardware store & purchase PVC piping, caps, and PVC cement. You'll want to sand down your piping so you have a matte-like surface. 600-800 grit sandpaper will do the trick. Also make sure you buy PVC caps and PVC cement to your piping corresponding to the thickness of your pipe.
  3. Measure twice and cut once. The average measurement of street pegs is about {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} long, so you can measure to your desired length. Once you marked the spot you would like to cut, measure again just to be sure. Then, using a pipe cutter or hack-saw cut the pipe. Once this is done, sand the ends down so they are smooth.
  4. Put the caps on the pegs. Put the PVC caps on the pipe using the PVC cement.
  5. Measure your axle. Either measure or find out the size of your axle on your hubs. Once you have the measurement, drill a hole in the cap 1 size smaller than what you measured. Drilling one size smaller will ensure a tight seal of your axle.
  6. Paint the peg, if you wish. 2-3 coats of primer followed by 4-5 coats of matte paint.
  7. Put the peg on. Squeeze the peg onto your axle with the bolts still on (this means the wheel is still on your bike and nothing is loosened). Once the peg is tightly sitting on your axle, take another axle nut and screw it in from the opening of the peg securing the peg on your axle and giving a tight finish.
  8. Go on and ride.
