Make Beachy Waves for Black Girls

Everyone wants hair that looks naturally beautiful. Follow this guide to get natural looking, shiny, healthy hair for black girls.

Steps

  1. Brush hair thoroughly before washing
  2. Get into the shower and wet your hair
  3. Massage in a moisturizing shampoo for about 2 minutes, then rinse. Repeat with a moisturizing conditioner
  4. Get a deep conditioner (something like Pantene Relaxed & Natural Deep Conditioner for Women of Color) and generously apply throughout hair. Put on a shower cap and wash the rest of your body.
  5. Get out of the shower and blow dry your hair for about 5 minutes to activate the conditioner.
  6. Remove the shower cap and rinse out the deep conditioner. Blot hair with an old cotton T-shirt, but don’t rub.
  7. Apply a texturizing cream or spray. Distribute the product and detangle hair with a wide tooth comb.
  8. If you have hair like mine, it probably poofs out as it dries. To define waves and prevent the dreaded poof, place 1-inch Velcro rollers to lift roots, and then make big braids throughout your hair. Clip the ends of the braids to your scalp (even if you have long hair).
  9. Blow-dry braids with a diffuser or a hood dryer until about 80%. Make sure the dryer is on the lowest heat setting.
  10. Let hair air dry the rest of the way. Then undo braids and remove rollers.
  11. Run your fingers through your hair to undo tangles. Apply a smoothing cream to keep hair healthy and shiny.
  12. Define random waves with a 1-inch curling iron. You may not need to do this if your hair is naturally curly.
  13. Spritz a light hair spray to seal the waves.

Tips

  • Using a cotton T-shirt instead of a towel cuts down on frizz.
  • Be sure to moisturize hair, especially your ends!
  • When you sleep, wrap hair in a satin night cap. You may need to repeat steps 11-13 in the morning.
  • If you have brittle or damaged hair, use a leave-in conditioner instead of a texturizer. Then use a texturizer instead of a smoothing cream.

Warnings

  • Avoid using too much product.
  • Combing or brushing your hair may cause it to frizz.
