Make Cheese Stuffed Naan
Naan is a famous bread from India and middle east that is traditionally baked in a tandoor oven. Many people think that it cannot be made without a tandoor, but that is not the case. The intense heat of the traditional Indian tandoor oven can be replicated in your home with this recipe!
Ingredients
- 1 package Active dry yeast
- 1 tsp sugar
- 3 tbsp warm milk
- 4 cups All-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup Warm milk
- 1/2 cup Yogurt
- 1 Egg, beaten
- 1 tbsp Oil or melted butter
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- Cheese, meat, onions, and fresh herbs are some optional stuffing choices
Steps
- Activate the yeast. In a medium-sized bowl, mix together the yeast, sugar and 3 tablespoons warm milk. Cover and set aside for 5-10 minutes.
- Add the flour to a large mixing bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, yogurt, oil, and salt, then slowly incorporate it into the flour.
- Beat the dough until it's nice and smooth. If using a mixer, use the dough hook attachment for about 10 minutes. To mix by hand, bring the ingredients together with a fork and then knead on a lightly floured work surface until smooth, also about 10 minutes.
- Form the dough into a ball. Place it in an oiled bowl, covered with plastic wrap, in a warm place. Wait until it doubles in size, which can take 1-2 hours.
- Remove the dough from the bowl, and punch it down with your fists on a floured board.
- Cut the dough into 8-10 equal pieces, depending on the size you want your naan to be. Roll each piece into a ball, cover the balls loosely with plastic wrap, and allow them to double in size once again.
- Place an empty baking sheet in the oven. Preheat to {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}}.
- Flatten each dough ball into a circle. Place 1 tablespoon of your stuffing in the middle and fold the dough in half. Roll each piece into an oblong shape with your hands.
- Brush the naans with oil.
- Place the naans on the preheated baking sheet for 5 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
Tips
- For a sweeter version, try stuffing them with raisins and chopped walnuts mixed with honey.
- You can sprinkle your naans with any of the following just before popping them into the oven. Mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fennel seeds, coarse salt, chopped cilantro, sauteed garlic. Just press the garnish gently into the dough.
Warnings
- Be careful not to burn yourself when using the oven.
