Learning the Emoticons
- Make a smiley face. A smile is conveyed by typing a colon, immediately followed by a closed parenthesis. Example: :)
- Frown at your recipient. This is done by typing a colon, followed by an open parenthesis. Example: :(
- Create a wide, happy grin. This is accomplished by entering a colon, followed by an upper-case letter "D." Example: :D
- Wink at your recipient. A wink is a semi-colon, followed by a closed parenthesis. Example: ;)
- Stick your tongue out. This emoticon is created by entering a colon, followed by an upper-case letter "P." Example: :P
- Gasp in surprise at your recipient. A gasp is indicated by a colon, followed by an upper-case letter "O." Example: :O
- Convey an expression of skepticism. Skepticism is represented by entering a colon, followed by a forward-slash. Example: :/
- Express angry feelings. This can be accomplished by typing the "greater than" symbol, followed by a colon, then by an open parenthesis. Example: >:(
- Express confusion toward the recipient. This is done by typing a lower-case letter "o," followed by a period, then followed with an upper-case letter "O." Example: o.O
- Convey innocence by depicting an angel. An angel is created by typing an upper-case letter "O," followed by a colon, then followed with a closed parenthesis. Example: O:)
- Convey evil by depicting a devil. A devil is made by entering the number "3," followed by a colon, then finished with a closed parenthesis. Example: 3:)
- Offer the recipient a rose. A rose can be depicted by typing the "at" symbol, followed by a tilde, a closed parenthesis, and 3 or 4 more tilde symbols to resemble the flower's stem. Example: @~~~~
- Create a penguin head. A penguin head can be made by entering the "less than" symbol, an open parenthesis, a single quotation, then a closed parenthesis. Example: <(")
Using Emoticons on Facebook
- Use emoticons with Facebook Chat.
- Navigate to the bottom right corner of your open Facebook session and click on the "Chat" box.
- Click directly on the name of the Facebook friend you want to chat with to result in the opening of a new chat window.
- Type the keystrokes for any emoticon into the chat box, then press "Enter" to send the message to your friend. Your friends will then see your emoticons in the window of the chat session.
- Use emoticons in Facebook Status Updates.
- Click on your profile page or the "Home" link at any time within your Facebook session to access your Status Update section.
- Enter the keystroke combination for the emoticon of your choice into the Status Update bar, then click on the "Post" button. Your emoticon will then appear on your Wall, and in your friends' News Feeds.
