Make Fish Cakes

Enjoyed throughout Atlantic Canada and the Maritime, fish cakes are a classic dish. Although some people enjoy them for breakfast, many others eat them for lunch and supper as well.

Ingredients

  • 450g cooked fish
  • 2 potatoes, cooked and peeled
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons fresh, chopped parsley
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 130g breadcrumbs
  • 1 onion, diced
  • Butter, melted in microwave

Steps

Fresh Fish Method

  1. Poach the fish in milk or water until flaky. Cod is the favorite choice of Maritimers, but salmon is preferred by some. You can also use haddock as another choice. Make sure you get rid of all the skin and bones after cooking them.
  2. Boil the potatoes and peel them.
  3. Place the fish and potatoes in a bowl and mash them together with a fork. They should be mixed together well.
  4. Mix the eggs, parsley, onion and breadcrumbs. Add to the fish and potato. Add salt and pepper for flavor. Stir well.
  5. Form the mixture into 8 patties, lightly forming into rounded flat patties.
  6. Fry in butter or oil. Turn once until golden brown.

Canned Salmon Method

  1. Buy a large can of salmon from the food store.
  2. Open the can and drain the liquid.
  3. Add egg and breadcrumbs. Stir.
  4. Form into patties and fry.
  5. Finished.



Tips

  • Fish cakes are easy to eat and make and are relatively inexpensive.
  • Enjoy at dinner served with spaghetti on the side.
  • Eliminate the potato for less calories and is not necessary for taste.
  • If this is for breakfast, enjoy with a Make an Egg and Tomato Stir‐Fry and toast. Nothing beats egg yolk and fishcakes.
  • Salmon is often better because of its taste; cod fish tends to be bland (but feel free to include such flavorings as herbs, salt and pepper, grated cheese, etc.).
