Ingredients
- 1/4 tsp of brewers yeast (wine yeast and even bread yeast can be used!)
- 225g caster sugar
- 1-2 tbsp of finely grated or chopped fresh root ginger (add more for a kick!)
- Juice of one lemon
- 1 good tbsp of clear honey
- A little dried chili pepper for an added kick
Steps
- Make sure you sterilise the bottle before adding any ingredients!
- Pour the sugar and yeast into the bottle. Shake to combine.
- Mix the grated ginger with the lemon juice and honey. Add more honey if you like the flavour.
- Pour the mixture into the bottle.
- Fill the bottle roughly half with water.
- Screw on the cap and shake until most of the sugar has dissolved.
- Fill the bottle to the top leaving a gap at the top for expansion of the gas.
- Screw on the cap and place the bottle in a warm place for 48 hours
- Check to see if the bottle is hard to squeeze. If it feels hard then its ready.. If its got some give then leave it another 24 hours or until needed.
- Place the bottle in the fridge for a couple of hours. This stops the yeast from working.
- Pass the liquid through a sieve to remove the ginger and lemon seeds.
- Serve on a hot summers day!
- Finished.
Tips
- Keep in the fridge.
- Use the ginger beer within a week of making for the best results.
Warnings
- This is alcoholic! Do not serve to minors under the legal drinking age of your country/province.
- Check the bottle everyday for overexpansion! If its tight after 24 hours then release some gas and cap the bottle for the remaining 24 hours.
