Make Homemade Paper Flowers

Do you want to make a flower? You can make a realistic flower, or an original one-of-a-kind flower! These flowers make great gifts for Mother's Day, romantic occasions, or as decorations or learning tools. Some methods may be better for kids or for adults, so be sure to check out all the options. Just get started with Step 1 below!

Steps

Construction Paper Daisies

  1. Cut the grass base. Take a longer sheet of green construction paper and fold it in half lengthwise (often called hot-dog style). At the side with the closed edge, make parallel cuts towards the side with the open edge but stop about 1.5" from the edge. Vary the width of the space between cuts, with most being close together and a few being thicker (these will form the grass vs stems).
    • If doing this project with very young kids, you can pre-mark the paper where it should be cut with a 1" horizontal border along the open edge and evenly spaced 1" thick lines for them to cut.
  2. Form the grass base. From the uncut base, roll the paper into a circle or tube-like shape and tape or glue it together.
  3. Make the flowers. Draw flowers onto different colored construction paper. Then, cut the flowers out. You can also add decorative centers by gluing on puff balls, buttons, or other items at the center of the flower.
    • You can also make more realistic flowers to go on this base if you want to.
  4. Attach the flowers to the stems. Using glue or tape, attach the flowers to the thicker strips that you left on the base (the stems).
  5. Enjoy! You can put your flowers in a bean-filled pot if you want to make them look more realistic and complete. You can also turn them into a bouquet by building a handle from rolled paper.

Crepe Paper Remembrance Poppies

  1. Prepare your paper. Get red crepe, wax, or glassine paper and cut it into circles at the size you want your poppies to be. Once you have the circles, form the petals by cutting rounded indents at three points just a short way into the paper. You will need 2 circles per flower that you want to make.[1]
  2. Get the petal look. Press your finger into the center of the circles and pull the edges of the circle up around in until you have a cup-like shape. Squeeze, roll, and generally further create wrinkles that start at the base and move toward the edge of the petals. Flatten the circles back out when you feel it is wrinkled enough.
  3. Cut your petals. Cut from the rounded indents that you made until about two thirds of the way into the circle.
  4. Glue the petals together. Put a dot of glue at the center of one circle and attach it to another circle, staggering the petals to make the flower look more real and full.
  5. Create the centers. Using small squares or circles of green and black tissue paper, do a similar wrinkling process to create the center of the flower.
  6. Attach the centers. Place the black tissue center on top of the green tissue center and glue them together in that way. Then, glue them at the center of the flower.
  7. Add your pollen. Using white out or white paint, dab dots of white onto the tips of the black paper to complete the poppy look.

Coffee Filter Roses

  1. Fold the coffee filter into eighths. Fold a round, paper coffee filter into eighths by folding it in half 3 times. Fold 7 filters in this way.
  2. Fold a few coffee filters differently. You'll also want to fold 2 coffee filters a bit differently. Fold these in half twice but then, instead of doing that again, do the final fold into thirds.
  3. Shape the petals. Using scissors, cut the eighths triangles so that the top, wide end becomes rounded. This forms your basic petal shape. Cut one and then use it as a pattern to cut the rest. When they're done, unfold them into semi circles and cut the semicircle in half. Set aside the petals that were folded into thirds at the end, as these will form the center of your rose.
  4. Start the bud. Starting with the petals that were folded into thirds, take one set at a time and fold up the bottom point. Glue from this folded up point to whatever you decide to use as a stem, wrapping it around the stem. Add on the rest of the petals the same, way, being sure to stagger them and alternate where they start.
    • You can make a stem out of a green pen, a thick wire, green pipe cleaners, or even buy fake stems from an art supply store.
  5. Add the rest of the petals. When you are done with the thirds-petals, move on to the rest of the petals. They should also be folded up at the bottom, glued, and wrapped around the other petals. Do not forget to stagger them. Keep adding petals until your rose looks full.
  6. Add finishing touches. When the rose is done, you might want to add a few finishing touches. You can finish off the base by gluing green tissue paper around the bottom of the flower or you can even curl the edges of the petals using a pencil.

Tips

  • After making a flower, try designing it and making more flowers.
  • Try making a lot of flowers and making a bouquet.
  • Spray the perfume {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} away from the flower to avoid drenching it.
  • Try bending the ends of the pipe-cleaners so it will not prick your fingers.
  • Try stringing beads on to the flower's stem (pipe-cleaner).
  • Try making different sized flowers.
  • Try adding leaves by cutting them out of green paper and sticking the pipe-cleaner through it.
  • Try folding the petals of the flower to make it realistic.

Warnings

  • Do not spray too much perfume on the flower. It may damage the flower.
  • If you're using a perfume that is not yours, be sure to ask first.
  • Pipe-cleaners can prick your fingers if you're not careful.

Things You'll Need

  • paper (origami paper)
  • pipe-cleaners (green ones work best!)
